Just got to my 10k miles, Probbbbably... I just got a new speedo sensor on eBay. To be honest, I'm a 22 year old knucklehead who has had this X1 for 2 months now. I am not an idiot and race anything with wheels, but I definitely enjoy it. My questions to all you experienced folk... 1. My front brake is making a little squealing sound. The front brake line is showing some leakage between the steel braiding and the plastic casing. Should I get a new brake line? Is the slight squealing due to this, or should I just take it off and get new brake pads? 2. It starts to vibrate in 1st to 3rd gear around 4k rpm. When I'm going faster, i dont really feel it. Is this normal, just a quirk of the bike? 3. The previous owner installed a forcewinder intake, but I'm not sure of the filter replacement. It looks pretty dirty. If its a K&N, I just need to clean it, right? So, I know that the manual says there are a bunch of things to replace or inspect at 10k miles, but I don't have a garage and I am sure as hell not gonna pay 600 bucks to let the dealer do it. Is there anything I should really be aware of, or inspect/replace to ensure that I don't blow up randomly? Specifics: Force intake, andrews cams, force exhaust, race ECM, just about everything else stock. Thanks for all your help. -Nick |

For the brake, replace the line and the pads (both cheap on eBay), and make sure you bleed it correctly. As for the vibration, it could be a number of things. Check the front isolator for rips or tears. If it is, GET IT FIXED or pay to get it fixed. The isolator itself is only about $20, but changing it out can be a pain. If it's bad and you don't fix it, before long you'll be rewelding that purdy Force pipe back together (ask me how I know). If the isos are good, check and make sure the front exhaust loop and the rear exhaust mount are secure and firm. I lost the bolt holding the rear of the pipe once and caused a bit of a shake, but not as much as the bad iso. Clean the K&N with a recharge kit, then pull the plugs and clean them just 'cuz I said so for good measure . |

Ok, yeah I have been checking out google shopping and ebay, and I see it would be pretty cheap to replace the front line and pads. I bought it with the rearmost mount vibrated-off, and had to have it welded back together already- (yes, it took me a while to figure out I had to take the O2 sensor off first)- so I dont think that any rubber is an issue. Unless I am sounding like a fool- and I am not exactly sure what the isolator is. I figure the best way to learn is to make mistakes, sound stupid, and not make the same mistake twice. And hell yeah, I wanna take the plugs out and clean 'em. Thanks, Phelan. -Nick |

Also, just to make sure this is normal... at about 65 in 5th gear I am at about 3100ish RPM. About what RPM are you all doing at 80? I just wanna make sure that the previous owner didn't mess with any ratiooooos. -Nick |

There are three rubber isolators, and you need to worry about all of them, but particularly the front. The front is just behind the lower triple tree, on the engine mount that says "DO NOT REMOVE". The other two are at the rear of the cases behind each of the frame clips that can be taken off on the X1. The frames clips are right by the controls. The holes in them are to inspect the isolators . The gearing sounds spot-on, but it's been about a month since I've ridden my S2, and it's '95 Euro spec HD hearing may be different anyway. Check the pipe where it wraps around the front of the cases. If it's like my earlier style Force pipe, it should have a steel clamp with an orange piece of rubber in it. If the clamp is loose and no rubber, you have a problem, so get some new rubber. |

First, get the service manual. And if your dealer will do the 10k service for $600, jump on it! I say that because the 10k service on my '01 advises, among other things, inspecting and lubing the swingarm and steering stem bearings. Don't know of any way to do that without removing the front forks and the swingarm. Which is something of a job. FWIW, when I did mine, both the swingarm and steering stem bearings were watermarked. Probably OK, but since I was in there, I replaced them. And yeah, the vibration is most likely the beginning of an isolator issue. |

check out American Sport Bike and replace anything that looks suspect. parts are pretty cheap for regular wear items and it gives you a way better point to diagnose things from if they persist. if you take detailed close pics of the isolators we can diagnose them for you... |

I checked out the isolator. It seems to be good, with no deteriorations and everything is tight. I'll monitor all of them, and if I feel any changes, I'll be back. Thanks guys. |
