suppose I am looking at a 2000 X1 tomorrow. Is there anyway I, as a layman, can determine if the shock recall has been done?

Are there any other essential recalls for the 2000 X1 I should know about?

Get the vin and contact your local dealer. They can run the vin for you and tell you if there are any outstanding recalls on the bike.

There are comparison photos here showing the old and new style shocks. Basically, the "eye" at the swingarm end is much fatter on the new shock. Once you know what to look for, it's easy to spot the difference. Try searching the Knowledge Vault.

It's not a big deal anyway, if the recall hasn't been done on the bike, your local Buell dealer is still obligated to perform it.

These are the only two recalls I am aware of that apply. Any dealer can run the VIN and tell you for certain.

quote:

Recall ID #28906 - VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES
Recall Date
OCT 30, 2003

Motorcycle Affected
2000 BUELL X1 LIGHTNING

Summary
ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES EQUIPPED EXCLUSIVELY WITH A FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM, THE IDLE CONTROL CABLE CAN BECOME DISLODGED FROM THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM CABLE GUIDE DUE TO IMPROPER ADJUSTMENT OF THE THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM.

Consequence
SHOULD THIS OCCUR, THE THROTTLE MAY NOT RETURN TO THE IDLE POSITION WHEN THE OPERATOR¿S HAND IS REMOVED FROM THE TWIST GRIP, INCREASING THE RISK OF LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A THROTTLE CABLE CLAMP, WHICH SERVES TO ENSURE RETENTION OF THE THROTTLE CONTROL CABLES IN THE CABLE GUIDE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUELL AT 1-414-343-8400.

Potential Motorcycles Affected
2830

Notes
BUELL MOTORCYCLE CO. 0827

Motorcycle Affected
2000 BUELL X1 LIGHTNING

Summary

Consequence
THIS COULD AFFECT THE HANDLING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SHOCK REINFORCEMENT PACKAGE (SRP) WHICH PROTECTS THE STRUCTUAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM. A NEW SHOCK ABSORBER IS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED. WHEN THE NEW SHOCK ABSORBER IS AVAILABLE, IF AN OWNER CHOSES, THEY CAN HAVE IT INSTALLED AT NO CHARGE THROUGH THE DEALER NETWORK.

Potential Motorcycles Affected

Some of the early recalled shocks have the small eye, so that is not a good way to tell.
