I have to replace my stator this weekend and I am curious as to what size the crankshaft nut is that holds on the rotor.

Also, is there an easy way to hold the primary in place while I remove that nut other than that special tool that Harley wants 40$ for. I've had to do this once before but this was a few years ago, what problems may I run into? Thanks guys!

I fabricated a locking bar (special tool) from a piece of 2" x 4 1/8" x 1/4" aluminum I had. Filed the ends down to fit the sprocket teeth.


IIRC the sockets are 1 1/6" and 1 3/16" for the main and clutch. Deep well are helpful.

The clutch side is also LH thread.

The FSM also says to replace the stator fasteners if you don't already have them.

I think you meant 1-1/16", 1-3/16"

The socket sizes are: 1 1/8 for the engine sprocket and 1 3/16 for the clutch. The clutch is left handed threads.

Ya...What the heck is 3/36"...Can't type worth a hoot this morning.

1 1/8" sounds better. I had to go buy sockets, and it was better to have a deep well on the 1 1/8".

Completed the stator replacement. Funny thing, the rotor assembly had sheared off the 4 bolts securing it to the crankshaft gear. Those little buggers did a job on my stator, but luckily they didn't f-up my rotor too badly.

Anyone see this before, and what would cause that much resistance on the rotor to cause the force necessary to shear off all 4 bolts?

Scott, my '99 S3 did the very same thing at 39K. I noticed that later model Buells starting around 2000-2001 had rotors with 8 bolts and not 4. I've replaced mine with an 8 bolt design. Found one off of ebay for a Buell Blast cheap. Same rotor, more bolts...good design. Here's an example:

I may do that. 100$ is worth peace of mind. It surprises me the blast uses the same rotor/sproket.
