I have always like using a tail bag on my Firebolt and the S3T. The S2 seems to be lacking in hooking locations without going across the body work and paint. So I stole another idea from the S3T and added the under seat bungee loops. They are a $1.80 ea or $7.20 for the set. I can't make them for that.

Oh ya! Frank thanks for the velcro seat attachment idea! Works great!

S3T with the tail bag hooked on.

Here's the p/n and from the date on the label they are kind of a slow mover. LOL

Loren, great idea. I use the seatlock hole for a bungee hook. On the deep bags I have bungee hooks in three different places. Works well.

Now that you have the S2 ready tour I bet you are thinking hard about which bike to ride to Colorado.

If you ride the S3 to the S2 rally I do not think anything bad will happen but I can not guarantee that.

That is an excellent idea! I am going to pick a set of those up for myself.
I use a tail bag on my longer trips and it was always a pain protecting the paint and getting the bag secure. These loops will be way better.

Thanks for the post.

Frank, I have been thinking real hard about riding the S2 out to Colorado. It just does not have the space the S3 has for two up touring. The seat is several inches shorter on the S2 than the S3. I also have a Ventura Rack for the S3, which helps on the luggage space for two up riding.

I do have a backrest mount figured out and an extra seat...just need time.

Of course given enough time or money those can all be solved. Not sure I have enough of either this year. LOL

That is ok, we will have special parking for S3s somewhere in the woods.

To tell you the truth, I think the S3 is a great two up bike. I have had Lynn on the back of the S2 and she did not complain but I much rather have her ride her own bike. She likes the Uly somewhat but not as much as the Electraglide.

I hated the Electraglide 2 up!

I look forward to seeing you. I better get on the ball and make my reservations.

If you can get your wife onto her own bike, just look how much that S3 can carry... I feel the rockies calling us... hmmm
loaded in the Northern Rockies

Heck that's not loaded down. LOL

I guess I can park in the woods...Man good thing I'm not on a Honda..I'd have to park in the next county and walk in. LOL

I don't think I will be getting MB on her own scooter anytime soon. She would rather ride pillion and enjoy the view.

I have bungee hooks on the deep bags. I am redoing them now. One down and one to go.

Looks good. Anything special on the paint or was it off the shelf product?

So what methods are used to make the S2 bags failsafe on latching?

Anything special on the paint or was it off the shelf product? The closest match I could find in a spray can was bumper paint. It is close enough for me. I only use these bags while on a trip.

what methods are used to make the S2 bags failsafe on latching? Duct Tape!

You were not at Homecomig last year but my left side bag decided to spill its contents on the interstate going to the Host Hotel.

The reason the bag opened in the first place was the nut holding the lock bar vibrated off. To keep my stuff safe I added small bungees and hooks to hold the contents in the bag, even if the bag opens.

I will post better pics tonight. I need to start on the other side.

BTW: I replaced the weather stripping around the inner cover with some I got from JC Whitney. I had a thread on it a while ago. It fits good and does not have to be glued on because it has a metal clip in it.

BTW: I have no expectation of these being water tight.

Finally got the bags done with some rubber washers I found at Lowes. I also installed hooks to run small bungees in the bag to keep the contents from falling out in case they open up.

You can see all the hooks I have on these things.

The paint is not a match but close... It is plastic bumper paint from Auto Zone.

You can see imperfections in the paint but for a spray can and outdoor furniture clear coat it is ok.

Bags look great to me, Frank! Wish I had some deep lids. I wonder if S3 lids could be made to fit?
With those eyelets installed, I guess now you can also put an extra "safety wire" from the saddlebag lid to the saddlebag body, so no more "ejecto-bags". ; ) It hasn't happened to me yet (knock wood) but Rat said the exact same thing to me at Homecoming the day before his popped.

Frank the color looks good in the photos. The bungees are a good idea. The S3 bags have a factory bungee set up, but every time I open the bags the bungee is unhooked. Looks like you have a better set up.

The seat arrived today. Wow, it sure is different feeling than the stock seat. I'll have to get some materials ordered to recover it. I'll probably rework it to incorporate the mid attachment bracket the '96 model seats used too.

Oh and thanks for the trade!

Jay, I just looked...the S3 lids are about 3/4" to 1" larger in the vertical dimension. (reference as mounted on the bike) So no they will not fit.

Thanks guys. Jay, you can get S3 bags to fit but you have to have the adapter for the S2 (basically a hard bag frame). I have heard it is pretty expensive, then of course are large bags for the S2.

Loren, I am glad the seat arrived. It should look good when you recover it. I road it like that for a year and it never got any worse. I am looking forward to putting the sidestand back on the S2.

As far as the bags something I really liked is the new weather stripping. I am going to order another roll for my small bags. It goes on without glue and stays. DO NOT order the replacement weather stripping from Buell. It will not work.

The other thing is the bags have a small protective piece of clear that looks like a washer where the hooks screw into the frame. I found some rubber ones (much thicker) at Lowes that I used. It helps get a tight fit.

These are the bags that opened up at homecoming. Before that they almost came off the bike while going over some railroad tracks. They were each being held on by only one screw and a bungee cord. Of course I did not know that until I unpacked.

I cannot find the thread I was looking for but 1313 has big S3 bags on his S2.

There was an adapter kit offered by Buell to make them fit.

Frank, I recall reading about the bag weather stripping you did. If you order more post up the p/n from JC Whitney.

Here is the link. I think it was a 25 foot roll and I just measured what is left and I can do my small bags as well.

Frank,
Yes, the S3 to S2 adapter kit is still available, but it costs...ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

I just reread the post and see what you were trying to do. Put the S3 lids on S2 inners. That won't work like Loren pointed out.

Of course you can do a lot for a million dollars.

Heck, for maybe as little 1/4 million you could retro fit S3 bag latches to S2 bags. I may have to look into that idea some more. Anyone have a spare $250K laying around to fund the project?

I ordered one of these from McMaster to see how it would fit and look on the bags.

I'm thinking as a backup failsafe to the current factory latches. $14.35 per latch.
