I have a 99 x-1 with only 5800 actual miles. The rear shock just busted, leaking oil all over my garage. When I went to HD Buell dealer, parts man said there was a recall. Went to service dept., and they said it could have expired. Also found none of the other 7 recalls had been done to my bike by VIN #. I thought safety recalls never expired. Any info would be appreciated.

As far as i know there are no more replacement "units" to accommodate the recalls

Thanks, I will find out Tuesday what the dealer says. Bad part is I use the bike to teach MSRC on, so I'll just have to bite the bullet and by one somewhere.

You are right - no time limit on safety recalls.
Product campaigns are time sensitive.

Vintage Parts may have the parts, your dealer can order thru them, you can't.

I have some shock recall kits for S2/S3s - contains shock(14.7" Showa) front mount and a pretty large hardware kit that includes exhaust seals.
I want $250 plus shipping per kit, I have 5. The shocks are K0431.M, don't remember the recall #.
Shipping should be around $20-25 for lower 48 (big and heavy box). I'll check before shipping and charge appropriately.
If interested, e-mail me at
parts@highcountryharley.com

Good luck.
Zack

I had mine replaced under the recall last September. 2000 X1. No questions asked.

99 didn't re-call it was only the 2k!

you don't have to believe me but it's easier to get your shock rebuilt than to screw around with H-D forever trying to get a freebie.

The damn thing is 10 years old it's time!

How long is the average turn around for a rebuild?

I sent mine to an outfit in California called Aftershocks, one week later I'm golden. The 300+shipping was nothing compared to the 800+ for the high performance stuff, and my bike still looks stock to the untrained eye.

I got an 02 or 01 off ebay for $50 that claimed to have 5000 miles on it. I've put 2000 on it with no problems. I could be wrong but the later shorter/thicker ones may hold the oil longer. I just feel better having the thicker/shorter one anyway. I'd rather have that and rebuild it. I'm pretty sure the recall was due to the 99s possibly breaking while in flight. If you get the later one make sure to get the bracket that goes with it wether you buy one or get the recalled one. I don't think the bracket from the older/longer/skinnier one will work with the updated shock.

Called Customer service with VIN, and it's all covered under recalls. No time limit. As fof JSTFRFUN, I went to the dealer to buy one, and the parts mgr told me it was a recall , go to service. I have been waiting 10 days for the service dept to call me back. Buell customer service said they will call the dealer and tell them to repair my bike.

I have a 99 X1, the shock was NOT covered under any recall. When it leaked, I had to buy a new one. If the shock is now covered under a recall, I'd sure like to know about it.
