What exactly does the Buell race ignition change, is it just the rev limiter, or is there more?

AFAIK it has a slight change to the advance curve and raises the rev limit. but i have been wrong before. i still have a brand new one in a box to go on my S3 whenever i finish it.

Better bang for your buck is either a Dyna 2000 module/similar or if you don't mind a little wiring--one of the Dyna, Crane, S/E nosecone styles. Have multiple curves, some are programmable, single fire/dual fire, retard for NOS/turbo, rear cyl offset, etc.
(BTW,I have one for sale--hint,hint.)

Come on no for sure answers. I allready have one, just haven't gotten around to installing it,I thought I might do a before and after dyno run just wondering if it might be worth the time, even since the dyno time is free! Sorry Shane it came off of Jays S3T roller I bought.

Different spark advance curves to fight ping from the increased airflow (designed to be used with free-flow air cleaner and muffler), and to provide smooth power throughout the RPM band.

Higher rev limit.

That's all an ignition box can touch, remember? No influence on fueling like an EFI race ECM.

Real-world experience, my S1W with race kit and box doesn't ping. EVER. Even if it's 110 degrees out and I'm stuck in traffic, it has yet to ping. And, it pulls like a freight train right up to the rev limit.

And yes, S1 and S1W race modules are DIFFERENT. I ran an S1 box on my S2 for a while when I got it. Then I installed a thunderstorm top end (with more compression). Ping-o-matic. I haven't heard as much spark knock since I had an '81 Cutlass with a 3.8. I found and installed an S1W box (designed for t-storm engines) and no more ping. No changes to static timing, just the software. Works perfectly (I also have a race muffler on that one, and a taller filter behind the stock 'crooked ham-can').

RatBuell, I never realized there was 2 S-1 modules. I thought one for both. So which would be better on an S-1 with a Force ,K&N, jetting?

The only time I can remember pinging is in 100+ weather in stop and go traffic while two up.

I didn't realize there were 2 different ones either, this one came from a 98 S3 which was Thunderstorm though, no part number right now though. I assumed it did something with the advance curve though.

IIRC there was one listed for S1/S2, and a seperate one for S1W/S3(carb). I have an older catalog at work, from '00 or '01; when I get in today I'll post the numbers and applications, but I know they're t-storm/non-t-storm based. The M2 fits in there somewhere too, I just forget which box.

If you have a non-thunderstorm bike, use a non-thunderstorm box. A thunderstorm box will be too 'conservative' for the lower compression and you won't get as much bang for your buck. Conversely, as I found out on my S2 after I converted it - a non-thunderstorm box on a thunderstormed engine is too aggressive and you get pinging. LOTS of it.

The issue with using the Thunderstorm box on a non-Thunderstorm engine just bummed me out! I hadn't thought about the compression issue, so were Thunderstorm engines running lower compressions?

Thunderstorm engine was higher compression, which is more likely to detonate...hence the more conservative advance curves.

My '01 catalog shows:
N0306.9A - 95-96 S2/S2T models, 6800rpm cutout.
32680-96A - 97-00 M2, 96-98 S1, 98 S1W, 97-98 S3/S3T, 6800rpm
91438-01Y - 01 M2, increases rev limits of stock module, maintains low and mid-range precision of original module

Typing (and reading) that, it looks like it's the same box for a *Buell* engine (aside from the M2 box, which focuses on midrange which was always the M2's strong point), and the only one that's vastly different was the S2's *sporty* engine (low compression, heavy flywheels, very mild cams). Sorry to mislead!

At one point there were three different modules listed.

#1 - pn N0306.9A for the S2(T) with an rpm cut at 6800

#2 - pn 32680-96Y for the 97-00 M2, 96-98 S1, 98 S1W, 97-98 S3(T) with rpm cut at 6800

#3 - pn 91438-01Y for the 01 M2 rpm not listed.

Back to...

#1 is listed as the "Lightning Component Module" #2 is the "Racing Ignition Module" #3 is listed as just the "Ignition Module"

The above came from the '01 P&A book

It has been said..... You are looking for the "Q" curve module. If you look at the module and can see the numbers. They all should have a letter on them. This is the "curve" version

Something else to ponder if you pick up a used stock module.

The S2 had 49 state and Cali versions

The 97-98 M2 had a US and AUS versions

Lots of different numbers out there.

"Thunderstorm engine was higher compression, which is more likely to detonate...hence the more conservative advance curves."

97-98 M2's, 97 S3's, & 96-98 S1's are all 10:1 but not Thunderstorm. ALL tubers are 10:1 except S2's.

"Typing (and reading) that, it looks like it's the same box for a *Buell* engine (aside from the M2 box, which focuses on midrange which was always the M2's strong point)"

The M2 module was changed from the old oval 8-pin style to the small TC88 style in '02, that's why it's race ignition was changed. The other 99-02 models were injected so their ignition is controlled by the ECM.

Read this:

Bottom line, unless you have an S2, it doesn't change much.
