Okay I only got one reply in the knowledge vault. Has anyone heard of someone in the US doing a VFR,Triumph or Ducati single sided swingarm conversion for tubers. I know Metmachex and Gregs customs have kits but I wanna know of DIY who's done it.

I haven't seen it here if its been done. It would be a cool project, is it doable?

Drive sides the same on all these bikes?

Would you be required to change out to chain drive? (Bolt pattern on wheel for the rear pulley?) Just switch both wheels maybe...

How to attach the shock? Might have to modify the sub frame to allow mounting a standard shock - if so will the oil tank fit or where will it be moved to?

Will it affect the wheel base?

Not trying to discourage the idea, just a few questions off the top of my head that might help in researching it.

I'm thinking of flipping one those swing arms upside down that way drive is on the right side. The shock mount will be upside down and under the bike, don't know how close or mods would need to be done to get the measurements right. The widths and diameters swingarm pivot points is also in question.

I was mainly thinking Ducati or Triumph since they have 3 spoke wheels .Belt drive would be my way ,but chain conversion hasn't been thrown out.

I read STREETFIGHTERS religiously every month and have seen tons of single sided swingarm conversions done to everything but Buells. Metmachex is the only one I've seen on Buells overseas.

I know it could be done I just don't have one of each swingarm and wheel setups to begin measuring and head scratching.

A guy at Homecoming 2007 had an XB, had a flipped Triumph swingarm I think, GSXR headlight flipped upside down.

I don't remember who's it was, nor what it was named, but I remember it being in a mag somewhere..

The RAM aluminum single sided swingarm is supplied as a kit, complete with brake system, (in this case the optional Heavy Duty using twin Brembo light alloy racing calipers), transmission bearing carrier, wheel shaft, pulley flange (to accept the stock pulley), and hardware.

a few years ago, i started to draw up a tubular single sided SA similar to what's on the ducati 900mh. beautiful in my opinion. would look killer on a tube frame!



of course it would be reversed from that, so the pulley would be on the "strong" side, and it would use the standard shock position. i was planning on buying a Duc assy to get the hub and wheel. ran out of time and extra cash.

I remember seeing the RAM setup years ago, but it's right up there with the Metmachex setup.

The same thought went through my mind the first time I saw a Hailwood in person. My buddy that ran the Duc shop here at the time was informed if a wrecked ever came in to let me know. But as you know these bikes aren't ridden very much and the chance of one getting hammered are slim.

The RAM swingarm pictured above uses a Ducati 996 Brembo/Marchesini wheel, which is identical in pattern to the Buell wheels, other than being backwards. If a person really wanted it to flow better, they could swap the bearings and rotor in the front wheel and mount it backwards I suppose. It would be more cost effective if you are very good with measurements, frugal shopping, aluminum welding, and engineering, to buy the Duc spool, wheel, swingarm, rotor and sprocket off eBay and cut down the swingarm, flip it, and weld it onto a cut-down alum Tuber swingarm. Then get a chain and front sprocket a voila. It could be done for about $1000... I was seriously considering it at one time. Personally though, if I had the funds, I'd get the RAM swingarm, so I could keep the belt, and order a set of forged Marchesini 10-spoke wheels. I love the way they look on the 1098R...

i've contacted that guy about the ebay arm from the UK, this is his response;

1st email;
"Hi Lee,

Any Ducati models 916-998 will be absolutely fine for the wheel. The belt pulley will work up to a 190 tire, but if you go to a 200 tire you will probably have to convert to a chain, and that depends on which tire you buy because some have a smaller profile than others.

Wow those pics are badass! Edoardo your buddy has a fine ride. That sure is more reasonable than the other three out there. I wonder if the pulley/belt version is an earlier prototype. Now I wish I hadn't spent my wad on this new project. Damn what timing, looks like I'm gonna have to get ahold of an arm and start doin' some measuring.

a set was just sold on ebay 2 days ago, they were a little damaged, but definitely fixable, for 199, not bad.
I let it go because I wanna buy something new for my S1...
