I started pulling my bike apart to swap out the oil pump gear for the bronze one. Can I run the stock pump for now then up grade to the 22357-02b pump later??? Does the pump and gears have a wear pattern??? I'm not sure I'll mess it up by swapping pumps later? I don't have the cash for the new pump now but I have had the gear and gaskets for awhile. I have 9k on it now and I don't want a hand grenade waiting to go off

I recently had my oil pump out.My '99 X1 oil pump that is.

With 20000 miles the wear...on the drive gear was very minimal for 20000 miles.

With the anticipated further disassembly,i'll inspect NEXT winter again.

I'm not worried.And i do not think mine will grenade either

I have never heard of the pump going out like that, From what i know the pump is just a little bigger on the scavenging side and that's it. i highly doubt it will grenade!

The OIL PUMP GEAR TEETH are harder then the teeth on the pinion shaft oil pump drive gear !!!

That means the pinion gear is the one that wears out ...

What contributes to this: not getting the engine to operating temperature before running hard, primary chain too tight, and flywheel flex(that is why the XBRR had the oil pump it had and the 2008 XB's have the similar oil pump) !!!

I understand that the bronze drive gear is designed to wear first. I want too know if I change pumps with the bronze gear already installed will it wear out prematurely due to a (break-in) wear pattern from the prior pump??? Thanks everyone for your input!

Great question. The bronze gear is meant to deform rather than fracture so I would think you will be fine on putting in the modern oil pump assembly later.

I wouldn't do that with the old oil pump drive gear, but the new bronze once should have no problems deforming to a different tooth profile.
