Mystery to me anyways. You folks probably know what it is though. It's the black plug/cap in the center of the rear cylinder head. It's loose like a cap over a plug. The wire that goes from it to the harness has a braided cloth-like covering. I couldn't find it anywhere in the Service Manual, even on the electrical schematic.   | ||

Yep, temp sensor and if they did it right there will be one on the front head as well. | ||

None on the front. Maybe a front sensor tripping would mean the rear cylinder is already cooked? | ||

A '99 X1 has only the one head temp sensor, on the rear cylinder also, but is placed out by the spark plug. Are you having problems? | ||

My 2000 X1 has one only on the rear too. I guess they just put the sensor on the hottest part of the engine? | ||

I saw a real slick setup on a X1 with independent temp gages for each head. Of course the rear head is where all the heat is but it was interesting to see the temp on both heads. I wish I took a picture of it. | ||

This is after they moved the sensor from the side near the spark plug to the center of the rear head. I think all FI models after April 2000 have this arrangement. Not 100% sure about the exact date. | ||

Yep late 2000 started the center mounted temp sensors. Comparing the heads from my early 2000 X1, and 2002 X1, it looks like the sensor next to the plug is mounted so that fresh air gets to it from between the fins. If you take the sensor itself out you can see daylight between the fins. After noticing that, I'm gonna guess the sensor was moved to get a more accurate reading unaffected by outside air temp. |
