What does Directlink do that ECMSPY does not?
Not trying to put down the seller but just trying to understand.

DirectLink basically does the same thing...BUT the tuning guide alone is worth the money. Al and Terry spent many, many hours dynoing and tuning the Buell F.I. system and these tips and guidelines are excellent. You won't find this much info. anywhere on the net located in one spot. The reason I put the kit up for sale or trade is that someone may not have the money but may have parts to trade. I can do either. Thanks, Frank.

i was wondering about that thing. how the heck do you get the information from the bike to make adjustments? do you need a laptop bungee corded to the tank while you ride or what?

Putting the laptop in a backpack (or using a PDA) is a much better approach...

let me see if i understand this.
hook up the lap top.
ride the bike.
get home and look at data.
so do you see a tack and a/f ratio that was recorded during ride?

I have no experience with Directlink but if it is anything like ECMSPY, you could retrieve and modify fuel and timing maps (and a whole bunch of other parameters) from the ECM either while the bike is stationary (obviously motor running) or log data like AFR while riding or on the dyno.
But like Frank said, the real value here is the tuning guide.
But I thought most (if not all) of the work that Al and Terry did was done on XB models, e.g. DDFI II/III. Please correct me if I am wrong,

wouldnt it be difficult to check a/f ratio at wide open throttle through 2nd 3rd and 4th gears in the garage with no load on the bike?

Al and Terry did their work on XB's with the DDFI-II. DDFI-I is not that different at all and the tuning rules apply to DDFI-I as well as -II. The bike has to be under a load to properly tune so you will have to have the bike on a dyno or you will have to datalog. Can't do it in your garage with the rear wheel off the ground. You can adjust the idle but you have to put it under a load to properly tune. Thanks, Frank.

I'm a curious guy so I try quite a few not-so-smart things. One of them was putting the bike on a rear stand then letting the engine turn the rear tire so I could clean it with less effort. (not my finest hour)

Um.. it doesn't work very well. Lots of jumping and bucking and there's way too much slack in the drive belt. The bike runs better with both wheels on the ground. Or at least the rear wheel down
