My 02 has appx 8K miles - always been ultra reliable. I rode on X-Mas eve - then yesterday it was 50-ish degrees so I decided to go for a ride.

Turns over well - as usual - plugs are sparking strong....but they were completely dry, and there was not a whif of fuel from the cylinders when I pulled the plugs. I have fuel pressure - the system does pressurize when energized. I confirmed that there is electrical power getting to the injectors - but it seems that they are not getting the signal to actuate (squirt). I pulled the air box and sprayed some starter fluid (with topend lubrication) into the snorkel while turing over the engine - it fired up - just reaffirming the "no-fuel" delivery condition.

When this bike has sat for a period of 30 days or more, I would usually have to open the throttle just a tiny bit - and I do mean like barely putting some tension on the cables - to get it to fire up - once its running it idles fine - on its own.

The only thing I can come up with is that me messing with the throttle has screwed up the TPS setting - now there is no sign whatsoever of a desire for the bike to fire up.

I seriously doubt that the fuel filter is plugged, when I removed the fuel tank gas is running out to the rearside (inlet) of course, but I will double check flow, and delivery right up to the injectors.

I have the service manual, and I am in process of reviewing all the endless trouble codes, etc. Before I pulled the tank, I recall the engine check light sequence being normal - on for 4 sec, then off - with no repeat lighting. I am also going to check all the wire connections.

Again this bike ran excellent as it always has, when I rode it in late Dec. Now not even a hint of firing up.

I do not have a scanalizer. Probably $100 to have the dealer reset the TPS?????

i would try cleaning the injectors after you have confirmed the injector signal is there.

if the signal isn't to the injectors, either the ecm is getting another signal to not actuate or the ecm may be bad, or like you already stated, there may be a bad wire connection.

no experience with the buell FI, but is fairly common with cagers.

Be sure to eliminate the side stand switch as a possibility.

I can see how the sidestand switch would stop the bike from turning over, but not stop the injectors from firing.

On another note - I finished checking all the wires and connections - found nothing. BUT.....I reinstalled the tank and hooked up the fuel line and electrical connector. When I turn on the key, and the bike is in neutral, normally the fuel pump would energize with the engine light showing when I rock the switch to the run position - it is not doing that any longer. Now it will only do that if I pull in the clutch lever OR push in the sidestand plunger - but even then, when cranking it over it will not fire....still as you alluded, those sidestand switches have a nasty reputation for causing problems.

I am leaning toward the ECM being bad - everything else on the bike works as it is supposed to.

I guess I'll have to see if the manual has a test method for the ECM, or if the dealer can test it off the bike - otherwise, I am headed to the shop.

BTW, the engine light is not giving me any trouble code.

Did you make up a jumper to get the fault codes?

Download ECMSpy off of the internet, buy a ECMSpy cable off of ebay. Hook it up, read your codes and you should know where to go from there. I would also check the fuel pump for fuel pressure. Do this by pulling the fuel line off of the tank and then put the line in a can and cycle the key. The pump will prime and fuel will run out of the fuel line for about 3 seconds. If your getting fuel to the injectors and the injectors are not firing then you have an ecm problem. Get ECMSpy and check it out.

I mean't to say pull the fuel line off of the fuel filter. Keep it connected to the tank for the fuel pump check. If you get fuel out of the tank when you cycle the key, you have an ecm problem or plugged injectors. If you don't get fuel out when the pump runs then you have a clogged fuel pump. Let us know.

I used a jumper on the diagonistics plug (mounted in the tail section). The engine light is flashing code 33 - which is a fuel pump issue. I attached my diagnostics fuel pressure gauge to get a reading at the schrader valve - when the pump actuates - it does pump up to about 50 lbs, but it does not do that everytime - sometimes it only gets up to 20 lbs before it shuts off - so the fuel pump is now the primary suspect. When I crank the engine trying to start it, the pump will read 50 lbs constantly, but that is not part of the systems check method - but it sure seems like the engine should start with that amount of fuel pressure. And now that I think about it, I remember having to keep cranking the bike a bit longer the last several times I rode it - especially when I rode it in December. I stopped half way through a 150 mile ride, came out of the shop 30 minutes later,,,, and I do recall it being unusually difficult to start. So possibly, this was an indication of a weakening fuel pump or maybe regulator. The regulator is attached to the fuel pump assembly, making it more difficult to isolate as a suspect. One other thing I noticed, that doing the wiggle test on the relays, I was able to get the pump to reactuate - several times in fact. I think relays either work or they don't - fortunately there is an easy test method for the relays, so I am going to check those before I order a new fuel pump - maybe I will just order the entire fuel pump assembly ($170 ouch) and be done with it.

Sounds EXACTLY like how my X1 acted when the fuel pump went bad. The bike finally refused to start in front of a Victory dealer.. which oddly enough was more helpful with diagnosing the problem than the local HD dealer.

S3t do you have a copy of VDSD or ECM spy

you can run a pump and injector test, with it.

you indicated earlier that you had pressure, by ear? or by test gauge?

Which version of ECM Spy do I download?
I believe there was a "mirror" and a "primary" version. I plan to download ECM Spy and buy the cable regardless of my fuel pump issue.

I attached a fuel pressure gage to the schrader valve - the type specially for diagnostics - not a regular mounted type.

Yes - as I mentioned above, but obviously, I can't measure real run pressure "cuz" da bike won't start - I am going to get the Spycable and software......more fun to follow....

The static pressure is only a tiny bit higher, the pressire falls off only slightly as the pump assembley has an on board regulator that returns the extra fuel back to the tank as it regulates the pressure.

static pressure is 45 or better.

Finally got the EcmSpy to work.

code 33 (I already knew this) and the diagnostics report shows "fuel pump shorted to ground or open".

manual lists
1) Causes ignition fuse to blow (nope).
2) Fuel pump runs continuously even without motor running (nope).
3) Fuel pump stalls out or spins without providing fuel pressure (possibly). When I checked the fuel pressure, it read between 20 and 48lbs inconsistently - each time I energized it. So, Hopefully that is the issue. Now...all I need is money, and lots of time while I wait for delivery of a fuel pump.

so does "short to ground or open" actually mean that the pump has a short in it????????????
