Did you check your intake seals for leaks?

Maybe a vacuum leak at the voes, bad ground at the voes, maybe the voes is going out...?

Was there any trash in your float bowl when you pulled it apart? I had a similar problem with mine until I installed a fuel filter.

Still not idling? This is a reach - let's hope you didn't forget to turn up the Idle Speed Screw. Will it idle if you hold the throttle open?

If not, I'm guessing you didn't clean everything in the idle circuit. Let's go over it again.

OK, in the S1 service manual as mentioned above, look at the Idle and Low speed Circuit diagram (Figure 4-5) on page 4-8 and explain which passages you cleaned. Your carb should be the same.

In that diagram the passage that has to be completely clear is the one that connects the Slow Air Jet in the mouth of the carb, the Slow Jet that goes into the fuel in the float bowl, the Transfer and Idle Ports behind the butterfly, and the Idle Mixture Screw hole.

The best way to ensure that passage is clear is to spray carb cleaner through its delivery tube into the Slow Jet hole with the Slow Jet removed, forcing the spray until it comes out of the Slow Air Jet in the mouth of the carb and also out of the Transfer and Idle Ports with the Idle Mixture Screw inserted to about 2 1/2 turns out from lightly bottomed. The spray has to come out of each of those orifices. If it DOES NOT, that's your problem, I'll betcha.

Squirt the stuff through the Slow Jet itself too while it's out.

97,
Tried the gas cap before with no luck...

Hippyjoe,
Checked intake seals and no leak. Replaced all as precaution. There was a couple of specks of black dirt in there the first time it was removed. Clear now.

Sparky,
Screw was tightened the loosed 2.5 turns. Idles with throtle open.

I just repeated all of the following again...
Removed float bowl to take out the slow jet and main jet. Thoroughly cleaned both and sprayed carb cleaner through both. Fuel flows freely through slow jet, slow air jet, and idle/transfer ports. Fuel also flows freely through the main jet out through the needle jet.

I did this exactly and got the desired rusults... "The best way to ensure that passage is clear is to spray carb cleaner through its delivery tube into the Slow Jet hole with the Slow Jet removed, forcing the spray until it comes out of the Slow Air Jet in the mouth of the carb and also out of the Transfer and Idle Ports with the Idle Mixture Screw inserted to about 2 1/2 turns out from lightly bottomed. The spray has to come out of each of those orifices. If it DOES NOT, that's your problem, I'll betcha."

I can't get carb cleaner to flow freely through the main air jet though. I don't see any other way to access it other than from the throat of the carb. It sprays right back in my face. Could this be it?

Hey Jimmy, I had the same problem last week. I posted on the M2 forum. I had to take the bowl off and hit the low speed orifice from the butterfly side. It seems a tiny piece of dirt goes in but it can't pass through so I had to back it out with carb spray. GOOD LUCK!!! PS you may want too pick up a rebuild kit or a Dyno Jet kit for the gaskets.

So close.

You said, "I can't get carb cleaner to flow freely through the main air jet though."
But the Main Air Jet is not involved with idling; the Slow Air Jet is. The Main Air Jet flow diagram is shown on Figure 4-6 in the S1 manual. Or did you mean the Slow Air Jet?

So, if the Main Air Jet is not flowing carb spray out of the mouth of the carb, it's probably a piece of dirt that got inhaled and stuck in the jet orifice. It looks like one may have to remove the Needle from the Main Bleed Tube, remove the Main Jet and block the top of the Needle Jet with your finger while forcing carb spray into the Main Jet hole. Spray should then come out of the Main Air Jet.

Hope you get it solved. It should run like a top with a clean carb!

After further inspection the clog is definitely in the "slow air jet" somewhere between the center orafice in the mouth of the carb and the slow jet.

I've gone through a shop size can of carb cleaner. With the idle speed screw in I've sprayed cleaner in the slow jet opening with my finger plugging the idle and transfer ports. Then I repeated the same thing with the slow jet reinstalled and spraying through the idle mixture screw hole. The only other outlet would be the slow air jet, but it's clogged solid.

If there is no way to remove the slow air jet from the mouth of the carb I'm done and taking it to the shop...?

Try a single strand of copper stranded electrical wire that's small enough to go into the jet. It is soft enough to prevent damage.

Twist the wire with your fingers while gently pushing it into the air jet.

If that doesn't work, maybe compressed air applied from the Slow Jet orifice with the other openings blocked off would help?

good luck!

I'll try the thin copper wire. I tried the compressed air by turning the can of carb cleaner upside down. No dice.

Well you tried, but methinks you're not using the right tools for the job.

I'm talking about a noisy machine that can generate 150 or more lbs of pressure directed through a blow gun! If that necessitates taking the carb body to an auto, bike or tire shop, waddya got to lose?

"i know you're not supposed to, but i ran a piece of .012" music wire through mine.
good luck"!

The .013 music wire did the trick and cleared the slow speed air jet. Idles as it should now but is running rich. It wants to bog down when I'm on the throttle and there's a little black smoke coming from the exhaust. 2.5 turns on the idle screw may be a half turn to many?
