I bought my x1 a couple months ago and have read and read about how much better the penske and works shocks are. I looked at mine to see if I was lucky enough to have had the previous owner already upgrade. I assumed I had a stock shock on it. I just got my service manual though and the shocks pictured in there are not what I have on my bike. Mine has tapered ends, not just a cylinder. Any ideas on what I have. I can't post pics right now because I am at work. It is chrome and kinda football shaped.

the stock shock is all covered in "chrome" and tapers towards the eye's. sounds like you have the stock one. the replacement factory one does not taper & is a couple inches shorter and requires a new mount. i suspect that's what is in your picture.

You have a pre-recall shock. The issue was the added forces put on it due to the changes in the gearbox and flywheel weight.
You're gonna want to up-grade that,especially if you plan to ride aggressively

Ok, that is what I was wondering. I realize that these are a weak link. I just can't see spending so much money on a works or penske, hell even 4-500 is outrageous to me for a shock.

so if there was a recall on this I should be able to get it taken care of? is it like cars where it is free?

You should be able too. But you need to go to the buell website and enter your vin to see if it has been done or not. All recall will be tied to the vin on the bike if it has ever been done, And this is what i have heard about this. I dont know for sure or off hand as i have the 01 and most recalls were addressed on this years model And this all depends on if they have any shocks left!

The thing that kinda makes me mad about this is I bought it FROM A DEALER!! How can they honestly have a bike on their floor without all the recalls done? I know that this is a stupid question but it does seem like bad business to me

they were not all recalled. my 99 x-1 did not have the recall, but did have the old style shock. neither did my 99 s-3. but my 99 m-2 did get the recall

I had mine replaced under warranty roughly four months ago and the supply did not seem to be an issue. In fact, the first time they ordered the wrong replacement (I think it was for an S1) and I had to wait another two weeks to get the correct shock for my X1.
The dealer should be able to answer all your questions but you may have to be a little persistent and stand in their face...

They can not sell a bike with an open recall.

I'm not sure many of the X-1 shocks were subject to the recall, but it's REALLY EASY to find out.

Any Buell dealer should be able to resolve any questions in minutes.

Easy fix.

If you have to "stand in someone's face" to get a civil answer you've chosen your dealer poorly.

Rat, you are a Buell salesman, or maybe a salesman out of the norm for most of us, the average complaint is not just urban legend. and yes Court not all dealerships play by the rules. Las vegas has possibly the worst reputation for customer satisfaction, and they don't care, because there's another buyer around the corner who dosen't know, or dosen't care he just want's his Harley.
In this economy it's rabid dog eats rabid dog, and the dealerships are no exception,auto or cycle.

I've been to over 200 dealerships on behalf of Buell over the years . . . Las Vegas on a number of occasions including the opening of The Art of The Motorcycle.

You're tell me little I didn't know.

The question, however, was about your shock. I'm betting it wasn't subject to a recall but 60 seconds and a trip to the recall website can tell for sure.

Rat, I will get the vin tonight and send it to you. It will be late though since I am at work now and won't get home until after midnight. Thanks for the help. My shock is fine right now, no problems I just am figuring that it is a weak link and I am trying to figure out if I can get some more miles out of it before taking a hit on a expensive shock. This bike already handles better than I am capable of so I don't see the worth in buying an $800 shock. Maybe in the future I will become better and see the use but not at this time.

No problem, send me the VIN when you get a chance. I do have access to that from home, I just don't have parts lookup to tell you what the part number should be.

Also, as Court and others have posted, I believe there is a VIN-based lookup on Buell.com. I don't remember my password at the moment (I use autofill at home - my brain is weak, lol) but I'm pretty sure it's in the Owners section? I can check that when I get home as well, since my home computer has autofill for the site lol.

None the less Rat, I believe that you will find that the shock with the tapered end is not the correct one for the 2K X1. My 2K X1 had the temp fix on it when I got it(a bracket affair to strengthen the shock end, and keep the two pieces together upon failure)having never been graced by the replacement.
