Just reassembled the engine on my 99 S3 and the seals on the base of 2 of the valve guides are leaking - the front and rear. I'm sure that the seals all went in the same way and two are not leaking. Before I have to take the rocker boxes back off, does the bevel edges on the seals go up or down? Suggestions?

Valve guide seals only go in one way, are you talking about the push rod tube base gaskets?

If so the stepped portion goes into the sealing ring, they are very tricky to install sometime, be sure to look in between the cyl and the tube sometime the seal gets pinched back there.

Spidey, I did mean the push rod tube seals. They have a a flat side and an angled side. I put the angled side up under the retainer. Both exhausts leak, but the intake are ok. Someone said they were upside down, but it seems that manual says otherwise, but it is one of those vague manual pictures. If I need to play with the seals more, it is much easier than pulling the rocker boxes.

Dumb question did you use old seals or new?

Complete new gasket set. The top end was completely rebuilt. NRHS 1250 cylinders and pistons and stage 2 light heads.

had some cometic gaskets once that would not seal. eventually i just bought the retainers since they come with the seals already pressed in place. that worked. they are not expensive & the dealer usually stocks them

Just FYI I bought the NRHS pushrod tube holders and they are a great product for the price. No leaks and look sweet.
