Look at her: Excuse me for the quality, I didn't bust out the SLR for these shots, lol.   That photo doesn't even show the other half of the Buell junk I have around either..lol took off the forks, and am in the process of stripping the paint off of the X1 forks and making them purrrty.  Oh yeah, and as it sits, I still need to replace all motor mounts. With the setup I am currently using, is there anything I need to watch out for? I am using the centerstand, so no load on the rear whatsoever. Rear shock is now off as well. | ||

At this point it'd be easy for you to remove the frame.I did,overkill,yes. Also,it'd be a great time to replace those swingarm bearings. And while you're in there,the headstock bearings are the SAME PART. Think of it as a whole package. My X1 project is in the KV archives under "Swingarm bearings" | ||

Brin, good advice from Ducxl. I recommend the same. If you can get XB bearings for the neck of the frame. They are sealed and last longer. Also as far as replacing isolators you will find a crap load of info here. I have found the best method for me is to lay the bike on its side so I have leverage. It sounds crazy but I have been to a couple of rodeos and it works best for me. I will be real interested to see how your forks turn out. Good luck. Frank | ||

Ok. The swingarm and steering head bearings are the same eh? And the XB bearings will fit no prob? I'll be damned... Some things I noticed on the X1 steering head, it looks like the head was forced loose past the lock. It's weird. I've been toying with trading Guell for that XB fork setup he has, but then I'd have mismatched wheels... I don't really know what I'm doing...I'm hoping this fork swap is a straight swap and not much modding needed. Ok, duc, I might take the frame off.. Pointers? Undo all those engine mounts (top, middle, rear) Disconnect all wiring. Undo mounts. Now, how in the hell do I support the motor. Is there a trick? I can get skids from work. I like to have a digital camera and snap as many pics as possible.The reason being,you can get a pic of every wire routing(assuming you remove the wiring harness) and ties so reassembly is as originally assembled. The tiebars are no biggie.But they must go back where they came from.I liked removing the wiring harness because it freed up a lot of space to work.Once the frame is removed,you could(i did)remove the swingarm then swingarm support block to the engine. That last part allowed me to thouroughly clean all of the nooks.I like the cleaning part. I have the special Jims brand tool to remove the swingarm(and headstock) bearing outer race.It also works well installing the NEW race. The new bearings can be had cheaper from a bearing supply house.Name brand too. Very fun stuff to be sure.I enjoy spending this time doing such things.I'm paying attention | ||

Crap, I can't afford any of those Jim's tools things, unless I use the credit card that won't be paid off anytime soon. The reason I ask if the steering head bearings are the same as the swingarm bearings, is because I already have a new set of the steering head bearings, but could put those in the swingarm and get XB bearings for the neck. | ||

Anyone know if the XB wheels would fit on the rear of a tube frame bike? I'm guessing no. Just not sure why...Bearings maybe. | ||

They will, it's been done before. Al at American Sport Bike has the appropriate spacers to put the XB wheel on the rear. I do not knowif you have to use an XB axle though. Brin, I would put the XB bearings in the swingarm and the bearings you already have in the steering neck. I say this because I would think it a lot easier to replace the bearings in the neck later down the road when the bike is one piece again should you decide to do so. | ||

I want to go with an XB setup, but maybe I'll put a season on these forks and see how they fair then think about it. So, while the motor is out so far I'll be doing: XB bearings in swingarm. X1 fork swap X1 cams installed What's the benefits of the XB rocker boxes again? | ||

Better oil system breathing and less spooge. Not to mention one less gasket in the rockerboxes to start leaking. I want them. Make sure to plug the existing breather holes once converted though, LOL. | ||

No, those look like wheel bearings. The bearings you want are tapered. Wilson,i got your mail and am "onboard" so to speak.I'm preparing a response. Your bike is an M2.My Tuber is an X1.I've noticed the M2 has the same swingarm as the X1.I assume(as is my X1)you've got the same headstock bearings.You don't have parts&service manuals? I got my bearings from my dealer.But have known bearing houses nearby.I'm always surprised at the markups dealers charge over bearing houses. | ||

It was also a great time to ditch ALL of the old oil lines in favor of new cheap ones. As said before,this is a great time to perform cheap other maintainance duties | ||

Duc, So what would you recommend for replacing the lines with? I have a parts manual, but what bearing can I get for cheaper? Can anyone provide a link to the sealed bearing I can buy cheaper for both the steering stem and the swingarm? I also would like to know any other cheap maintenance I should do when I get it out. w. | ||

I just took a small length of it to my dealer and bought it by the foot from them.I was disappointed i couldn't get the protective "sheathing"(you can see it in the pic above on the oil line furthest away) that slips over the oil lines and runs the length of oil line exposed below the engine. I think i paid $26 per set of two bearings from HD.You can save some if you BRING your bearings to a Bearing supply house nearby.'Look em up in the yellow pages under | ||

Still the same as before...Unfortunately I don't have anyone in the area that has any knowledge/experience on working on this, and I think I may be a bit out of my comfort level. Though, its been damn cold, so another reason why I don't venture to the barn much...15 degrees is damn cold to be working in... Plus, I spent my money on shit that doesn't fix the bike, and now have to sell a couple of Corbin G&L's and some other shit to get her running again. | ||

Well, I don't have any torque wrenches, the crank seal tool...etc. Having trouble getting the money to buy the parts I need because I spent it on stupid shit. So, I don't have near enough money for the parts needed to get her going again. Then, it's time to try and figure out the updated parts numbers so I can order them online and get 20%. I will be up in Great Lakes, IL Fri-Sat-Sun for Drill at the base in Great Lakes, figures...warms up and I have drill... I may be also bringing the bike up your way near Kenosha and having some buddies help me with her...Now I just need to find a trailer and truck... (Message edited by brinnutz on March 04, 2009) | ||
