In my antagonizingly slow engine rebuild I've come to the part where I'm supposed to take out two per retaining rings and according to the book the pins are loose and should slide out. What the...? They're in there tighter than a mouse's ear. I don't want to put any side pressure on the connecting rods but these things won't budge at all, any ideas?

you are right about one thing... DO NOT put any side pressure on the rods, bearings will be destoryed.

I thought all of them were floating pins though.

hopefully someone with more engine building expirience will chime in.

You should have a retaining clip at either end of the pin, IIRC. I have - carefully, not swingin' for the fence here - used a deep well socket sized to fit into the pin recess of the piston, and a hammer or ratchet head to tap it a couple times, to break the pin loose from the piston. That, or do you have an easy-out? Put it into the hollow center of the pin, and get it to rotate in its groove, seperate from both the rod and the piston.

Sounds like you're going to want to check rod end play and wrist pin bushing spec while you're rebuilding...

I'm speaking from 2 stroke experience, but mine just pressed out with a push from a socket. Try heating the piston with a hair dryer and then push out the pin. I don't like to use a p-torch unless all the oil has been flushed clean, so beware if you use that method.

Heat the piston well and use a piston pin remover,or make your own.
Never ever try to punch it out.

Thanks guys I'll try some of these tonight. I had all four retaining rings out when I tried to get them out. Both pistons won't give up their pins, I tried the socket procedure with no luck but the rear one did give a little, maybe 1/4 inch max. I already have new cylinders and need to order the pistons. I'm just putting it off to see what all I need and make one big order. I really, really don't want to split the cases but it's looking like I might have to. This all started because it started knocking real bad on the Blue Ridge and I thought it was the oil pump gear gone bad but it looks like new. There were a few metal shavings in the oil filter so something is ground up somewhere and I haven't found it yet.
