I am wondering what the benefit would be of putting in X1 cams into my M2. I can't remember and search isn't bringing me back anything.

I just remember the main difference beside FI was the cams, and that the power curve was a tad different because of that.

What would it benefit me in installing X1 cams?

and, is $55 for pushrods and x1 cams a good deal?

(I had to ask Matt, LOL)

no no, it's a good idea to ask. I have no idea what they are worth either. 55 does include shipping...


BTW, to anyone answering the question.... The cams came out of a Millenium (2000) X1 with 18k miles, great shape, and the M2 is a 2002

If I remember correctly, the difference will be an increase in the top end HP with a little loss of torque in the bottom.

$55 shipped is a steal. Most cam sets for stock 1200 sportys like the D cams in my 1200S go for $50-60+shipping. I was under the impression that the M2 had more midrange than the X1, not low end. The X1 did have more top end though.

I'm going off of memory (suspect at best) and the butt-dyno comparison I did on my '02 X1 and '02 M2 when I had them both.

The X1 had the top end nailed.

The M2 had more 'grunt' off the line.

Never really noticed any butt-dyno difference in the mid-range between the 2.

Again, YMMV, so take my input for what it's worth.

I guess it means the M2 cams are more potato potato and X1 cams are more ring ding ding? I think it has more to do with where you shift. Personally I ride more ring ding ding, which is why my 1200S had a drive gear failure at 12,500 miles.

I shift at high rpms. More beneficial to have x1 cams then?

Putting X1 cams in your engine would be the best band/buck mod you can have.

You might have to increase the idle speed due to the increased overlap.

If you're after cheap HP (and $55 is relativley cheap), then the X1 cams in your M2 is a good deal.

I'd defer to someone else to confirm, but other than the cams, I don't believe there is any significant difference between an '00 X1 motor vs. an '02 M2 motor, as I believe they were both TS heads, etc.

Cams & fueling (FI vs. Carb) were the only major difference that I recall in regards to the motors. Displacement, Bore, Stroke, compression ratio all appear to be the same:
Displacement 1203 cc
Bore & Stroke 3.5 x 3.8 in. /88.8 x 96.8 mm
Compression Ratio 10:1

HP/Torque comparison (Info from http://motoprofi.com/):
’02 M2 - HP/Torque 91 hp @ 6000 rpm; 84.75 ft-lbs @ 4900 rpm

’00 X1 - HP/Torque 95 hp @ 6200 rpm; 85.29 ft-lbs @ 5600 rpm

The peak Torque on the X1 is higher than the M2, but notice the torque on the M2 is deliverd a LOT sooner, thus why it felt like it had more 'grunt' down low.

Again, YMMV, but I don't think it's a bad deal.

I did the same thing with my M2 and noticed more hp on the top end, I did not notice that much if any of a loss on the low end but she has been profesionally tuned!

You are all correct. The big difference from the X1 and M2 are cams and front end. You will notice a nice change if you normally shift at a higher rpm now.
