I have been reading all kinds of posts here about all kinds of troubles folks have with their Tubers but nothing on any issues with clutches.
I know a lot of folks do wheelies, drag race, etc., so how come no one seems to have any complaints about their clutches?
Are they really that good? How long do they last under "normal" conditions?

That could be because they have PRODUCT IMPROVED their clutch by removing the SPRING PLATE PN 37077-90(know as the"GRANADE PLATE" which, when it goes takes the clutch with it) and replacing it with 1 FRICTION PLATE PN 37911-90 and 2 STEEL PLATES PN 37913-90 ... This makes it the equivalent of the aftermarket RACE CLUTCH ...

This is the equivalent of the aftermarket clutch which comes without this "SPRING PLATE" for the BIG $$$.$$ ...

Do not know how long this "SPRING PLATE" is supposed to last, "BUT" mine only lasted about 50K miles ... Was lucky because was mine was caught before it took the complete clutch with it ...

What happens is you can not keep you clutch adjusted ...

SPORTSTERS have not had this "SPRING PLATE" in them since 2001 and the BLAST/XB Models never had it ...

This "plate" you speak of... is it in the middle of the clutch pack, between the fiction disks and steel plates. I am looking in my 2002 X1 parts book and the part you describe (my book has part# 37977-90) looks to be in the middle.

Hey Kalali,
even though clutching up a wheelie is the better way to go, I just use the POWER! and compared to sportsters and other Harleys our bikes don't weigh as much so the strain on the drivetrain, clutch, etc. isn't as much as the bigger bikes.

Thanks Buellistic.
So when was this improvement made and how easy is it to inspect and see if I have the spring plate or not?
My X1 production sticker says Nov 99.

I think Buellistic was saying that all tubers are like that, their owners have 'improved' it themselves.

Teaxstechx1:

The FACTORY PARTS BOOK is correct ...

If you have bought a used BUELL, it may or may not have been done ... This was a early on "PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT", "BUT" there is lot of low mileage BUELLs out in BUELL LAND that have not had this done ...

Ahhh, I see. I bought mine brand new off the showroom floor... I'm guessing mine hasn't had this done. No matter anyways, I am doing some primary work very soon and will check/do this mod.
