What would the best way be to gear down an M2. Are there any aftermarket oversize belt drive sprockets out there, or would I have to convert to a chain drive? | ||

i dropped my front sprocket to a 26??? tooth baker lightweight unit and there are many others that have done the sam i think that it is th cheapest way to get the gearing a touch lower. suits the bike nice... you can reuse the belt you have with this mod there are also many here that run a chain drive and that is going to yield more results. Some like chain and others like the belts the bikes came with so you have to make the final call. i see chain drives for sale used all over so if you want to go used there are chain drive kits for sale around the classifieds. | ||

why would you want to gear these pigs down????? i want more top speed. and the torque is prob crazy with lower gearing eh??? well do you know if they sell taller gearing as well. | ||

"gear down" would be easy with a smaller front pulley, easy to find the 26-tooth, either lightened steel (Baker Longlife) or aluminum (BDL or Baker.) Unless you want one cheap, that is. Cheapest I ever found new was about $117. I've never seen a bigger rear pulley than 61 listed for sale by anybody. There's some web sites where you can work out the ratios (rpm at a certain speed) I'll check to see if I saved that combination. I worked out all these possible combinations, before I added the Baker 6 speed to my M2. The Baker XL6 lowers the first two gears so that it's MUCH easier to stay at a constant 30 to 40 speed limit in town. This really has the best of both ends, the lower two gears are noticeably lower and there's another whole gear on top. | ||

I run a 26 tooth on my M2 and it works fine. I still rarely ever use 5th gear unless I am sustaining speeds over 75mph. It adds a little more take off power, but I don't feel like it was a massive change on the bike. The biggest benefit I noticed was the bike was easier to ride 2 up at slow speeds around town. | ||

The six speed sounds good, but I don't think my wallet is fat enough  The smaller front sprocket might be in my range though. Thanks. | ||

Why not put another rim on the bike? I put a TL1000/Busa rear rim on my tuber. Had to mill out the swingarm holes and the brake caliper holes, make custom spacers, but now have cush drive chain with 6" rear rim. My 200/50 looks great, and VORTEX sells sprockets for them from 36 to 72 teeth. I run a 24/48 combo. Try an keep up! | ||

Well seems I didn't make a gear chart for the 26 front 61 rear, I was trying to gear up, not down. But, as reported above, that looks by far the simplest and cheapest way to go. Those pulleys cost less than $125, might be able to catch one on ebay too. I found a 29 tooth aluminum there for less than half that, don't need it now that I went with the XL6. |
