Has anyone cut the ugly square license plate holder down on an x1, I want to remove it when i can afford the carbon one, If anyone has trimmed theres down could you post a pic. Thanks all | ||

man, wish I still had pics..... It is easy as hell... you can trim it all the way back to the aluminum, and then take 2 flat pieces of aluminum and use the tail light bolts and use them to mount the plate. LED's glued into the bottom of the plate or a clear piece in the bottom makes for a good plate light. | ||

I'm getting ready to make a template to make a new one. I just saw the other day that my SS one has bit the dust. I have some flat stock in the garage that will work good, just going to mount it in the top two license plate holes and it's close enough to the brake light to light up the plate. I haven't had the plate light on it since I put on the carbon piece probably eight years ago. | ||

Ah thanks Cowtown, Hey why do you cut it into 3 pieces can the the middle piece and main front be left together, Im am just a little confused about why. | ||

Honestly, All you have to do is take the plate off and chop it with a hacksaw. I never bothered to do it on mine. I stuck a "this bike climbed Mt. Washington" sticker on there instead. | ||

Preybird, the middle section is flipped upside-down, overlapped slightly and then glued. In stock form the middle section hangs down below the tail section, this way it turns up and you can give it the necessary angle. | ||

You lose cargo capacity doing that though. You can't smuggle as many fireworks like that. | ||

The People's Republic of Massachusetts. They actually stake out the fireworks stores on the border with undercover lookouts. Solution: Buy fireworks farther north. 7 miles will do. I have a class A license to carry a concealed firearm but I can't shoot off some bottle rockets for the nations birthday. Sorry about the threadjack. I agree with the observation that the rear fender looks like an infected toenail on an otherwise curvy bike. I would have chopped mine by now but I have never had a reason to take it off. That's one of my policies: Leave it alone til it breaks. | ||

I got a cheap knockoff CF piece from ebay. the lines on it don't match up perfectly with the bottom of the subframe, and there's nothing to mount it with other than the holes around the tail light. BUT I got some rubber hose (forgot what size) at oreillys.. supposed to be for fuel tank vent line, sliced it open, and ran it around the edge of the CF piece. it cleans up the lines a lot and now matches perfectly to the bottom of the subframe. As for mounting.. I used speed nuts designed for car interiors, clipped them onto the lower portion (front) of the undertail, then drilled holes in the edge of the subframe where they would be hidden by the seat. A couple zip ties later that sucker is strapped down tight, and without taking the seat off you'd never know the difference. Dunno if you're interested in that route.. but you can clean up the stock tail for under $200. I'm almost positive the CF undertail I got on eBay was a used airtech piece. I like it because it doesn't have predrilled holes for turn signals, which I don't have mounted in the back. | ||

Well i don't recommend a die grinder for this job, It mutilated the 2nd piece of the trunk, i will just make an aluminum piece to fill it in. | ||

Preybird, I bought a new trunk (I think that's what they're called) for $7 or $8. Very reasonable but I'm sure it will have to be ordered. | ||

Nate, The town I live in has three warehouses w retail outlets for fireworks, however it's against the law to posses them(kinda like paraphenalia)the sale of it is legal but you go to jail for having them. No problem. UPDATE: OK guys i sliced and diced ground and snipped a piece of aluminum 12"x24" 1/8" thick and some tin snips and heres what i got I used 2"-1/4" x 1"bolts and 4x standard 1/4" washers and 4 locking 1/4" washers to bolt the aluminum to the plastic front trunk piece. Then the same bolt thread pitch bolt as the lock plate screws but 3" cut down with a die grinder i put the bolts through from the top of the lock plate all the way through the tail plate i just made, then i put the nuts on the outside of the plate. Yes they need to be trimmed ill do that tomorrow. I also had enough material left from the sheet to make license plate bracket as well and i still have more material. So on the bracket i made a hole for the license plate power wires and a second set of holes for when i eliminate the bulky plate light and get a small led to eliminate it and move the plate back up, I think i will stick the led to the bottom of the brake light lens with double sided foam tape. I put the lock close to the fuse box side of the trunk, I just used a large drill bit and wallerd out the hole until it was big enough to squeeze the lock through, Tightening the large bolt on the lock assembly in the new location was a challenge.
