Those of you folks who have painted the aluminum tail sections of your X1s black, could you tell me how you did it, e.g., how did you prepare the surface, what kind of paint did you use, etc. Or, are there better methods for changing the color to black, like powder coating, etc.? I am looking for a glossy/shiny finish just like the OEM except in black.
Thanks in advance for your input.

My suggestion is powder coating. More $$ but much more durable than paint; do it once and never think about it again. A good investment if you plan to keep the bike a while.

a painted finish is NOT durable to normal wear and tear. I'm experiencing that right now, but my budget prevents powdercoating.

I would prep by stripping OEM clearcoat, then wet sand to 800 grit for primer. 1500 grit the primer for a base coat. 1500 grit for the clear. 2000 in between clears. 3 coats of clear might over do the shiny effect. how glossy are you looking for? Are you going frame color or body?

PM me if you got more question.

I'm on the wall about powder coating.

I had mine coated and the small scratches bug the crap out of me. At least with paint you can touch it up or buff it out.

"how glossy are you looking for?"

Just about as glossy as the OEM clear coat...

"Are you going frame color or body?"

Not sure what you mean by body but all OEM plastic parts and the frame on my bike are black.

And thanks for your input and offer for help....Appreciate it.

"Hey Crazyhorse - I may be interested in the tail section. Put me in line behind Kalali."

Thanks for your courtesy.
I looked over my list of "improvements" and have to pass on the tail for the moment..It is amazing that most of the stuff is right around the $150 spot, like the 01-02 shifter assembly which is next in line...
BTW, does it really improve the shift action?
