So im just coming off the freeway in a sharp right turn and the oil light comes on! So i look down and all the oil in the bike just came out all at once all over me and the bike! Holy crap i start fish tailing all over and no brakes tires are all oily!! Whoa! Ok got it off the road and trying to look at what happened. And noticed the oil filter was askew, So i thought what the hell, The oil filter adapter Had vibrated loose on the bike side and almost fell off completely, Dumping massive amounts oil all over me and the bike....God that was freaky scary.

undetermined amount of time....Ok i got it all cleaned up and removed the adapter and re-locktited it and torqued it down to spec. Now i pray this never happens again!!

I don't want to the the bearer of bad news but...
The same thing happened to my M2.
I didn't catch it right away I drive about 1 1/2 miles befor eI notice the light, I hope you caught yours right away. Mine went a little too long without oil.
After cleaning it all up and putting in fresh oil, all seemed well until it started to burn oil.
I was concerned so I tore the top end apart and put in new .010 over pistons and installed new valve seals.
The cylinders showed signs of slight seizing. I also lapped the valves at the same time. The guides were borderline... I didn't replace them.

About 700 miles later I started to hear a bit of a knock from the bottom end.
The crank had been damaged from lack of oil. the knock kept getting worse.
I stopped riding it at about 1100 miles....

I'm still looking for a crank....

Watch your oil VERY carefully. If you notice any silver specks that would indicate internal problems with bearings etc.
You may even want to cut your oil filter apart to check.

Thanks for the heads up, I think i got it in time it happened in a 5 block area pulled off immediately fixed it the best i could with a crescent wrench, Checked oil level, then rode to the nearest car wash 4 more blocks, cleaned all oil off. Had a friend drop off 2 qts of oil and its running fine so far but i will definatly keep an eye on it.

A hose clamp and some safety wire is in order from now on. This will never happen to me!

15.... both tires were completely covered in oil, front tire and rear were sliding opposite of each other like i was in mud!

I was just talking with a guy at work about this last night. I was telling him that I had heard of this happening and I went ahead and installed a hose clamp and safety wire.He has a ultra glide and said he had never heard of it happening on a harley. I wonder is it the higher revs that make thes bikes victims of this? Glad to hear you made it out without a major catastrophy!

I wish I had known you were looking for a crank. We just sold a good used crank out of a 96 Sporty for like $250 on e-bay. Its a little heavier than your M2 crank but it would have done the job.

We do have a 2001 crank out of an X1 that we could let you have cheap. It has damaged threads on the sprocket shaft so it would need to be welded and re-tapped to use it.

I am not sure if the revs did it, But i did put on a bigger filter...Well i didn't my mechanic did but i was standing there watching. If that adapter is even remotely loose it will come loose. That is why i put more loctite and re-torqued. Oh and the old filter was on way to tight and this may have loosened the adapter, I had no idea it was an adapter i thought it was part of that half of the engine case!

As for the oil filter coming loose. One of these days ask me to tell you a story of when I was riding a friends S3 in St. Louis a few years ago.

Happened to me in Topeka at Heartland Park Topeka . . . it was on a Sportster and the filter let loose in a turn leading to a spectacular 360o. A BMW and a Honda in the track behind me both hit the oil and went down . . . no injuries, lots of laughs (afterwards) and a trophy hanging here from Reg Pridmore for "S.H.I.T." (Special High Intensity Traning".

someone once posted a picture here using a marine T-bolt hose clamp around the filter.

By placing the T-bolt on the bottom and a rubber cover on the protruding end of the bolt, it was positioned so that the rubber covered end was up against the engine case so that the filter could not rotate.

This way no safety wire was needed yet the filter and adapter are secure.

PS I'm glad you kept it up and did not have riding buddies behind you!
Unlike Courts friends I would have a hard time laughing it off!

Really? I didnt know that thanks, Well i will for sure switch to the k and n. I was using the longest one americansport bike has. But i think the real problem is the adapter was loose and the filter was on tighter than the adapter was.

Man bluzm2 you had me worried about what happened to your bike, I heard this weird noise and saw smoke so i looked around for a minute and found that one of my breather lines had split apart and it was leaking air.
