Hello Buellers,
I have a question for you.

Where do the Buell model names come from?
I have always belived they were named after American war planes. Some are saying they are after elements.

What is it?

Cyclone
Lightning
Thunderbolt
Blast
Firebolt

I want to settle an argument!

Thanks

Jodie

There's been alot of discussion on that.
I'd ask Court. He's knowledgeable on both airplanes, and Erik Buell, and can probably give the most accurate answer.

And believe very little of what you hear . . .some stuff, the "RW stands for Road Warrior" is a perfect example, is marketing department fantasy.

I think you are thinking Helios, Greek god of the Son...

A Helicon is a crater(lunar)... I had to look that one up...

Actually Helicon was a mountain in Greece that figured in a big way in Greek Mythology.

Hey!

Yer leavin' out "WESTWIND"!

Not necessarily "bad" weather, but more of a precursor of things to come.

I have to park mine facing north, so that the "wind" device is on the west side. Other wise, it would be a "PassWind"

AL

and all you guys ARE just biker trash!

"Man where was i 9 yrs ago when these bikes came out."

Hate to break it to you, but it's been a bit more than 9 years (try 25!)

You were out on that skateboard, raising hell in the neighborhood.

Beautiful bike Allen, how come you don't show at American Sport Bike meets like this last one in Las Vegas?

That machine would have had us all drooling. Do you ride it much?

Thanx Court, now my brain will explode!

J-fun
Don't ride it much - had it out to the sidecar meet a couple of weeks ago, and popped over the the Norton/Brit meet at Hanson Dam a week before yesterday. Poor thing sits in the garage a bit too much.

I'm actually sitting here drinking some ice water from the mug/trophy I won with the RS at American Sport Bike's "4th Annual" BBQ several years ago.
"BEST S-2" or maybe best of show - don't rightly recollect. (maybe it was for "best use of S2 parts on something else"?)

Tat still ran the place, just prior to Al's taking over.

My aging, arthritic, out of condition, slightly paunchy body is not all that comfortable on the RS, though my tough-as-nails 19 year-old ride-it like-it's stolen soul just loves that RIP when the turbo gets to boosting!

You like buy? (as they used to say in Hawaii)

I'd like to trade it for some version of a big twin H-D.

Let's remind Court to someday tell us why the RS bikes were called "Westwind"

Well, they must've been some pretty fart smellers to settle on "Westwind" rather than something like "Southwind." ; )

So... Ulysses is obviously from Greek mythology, and I now know that Helicon is too...

With a little digging I've found:

ZEPHYROS (or Zephyrus) was the god of the west wind, one of the four directional Anemoi (Wind-Gods).
...........
In Greek mythology, the thunderbolt is a weapon given to Zeus by the Cyclops.
...........
The word cyclone appears to have been coined by a Captain Henry Piddington, who used it to refer to the storm that blew a freighter in circles in Mauritius in February of 1845...It may have been derived from the Greek word kyklon, which means moving in a circle... Others argue that the word was derived from Cyclops, a creature in Greek mythology with one eye, as it is 'turning wind with one eye'.
...........
Cyclops - They were a race of giant-shepherds in mythology. They lived in Sicily, and each of them had just one eye in the middle of their foreheads. They made weapons and armour for the gods. Apollo destroyed them because they made the fire-bolt that killed his son, Asclepius.
...........
As ruler of the sky, Zeus was also the god of thunder and lightning. He is commonly depicted with lightning bolts - his original lightning bolts were fashioned for him by the three Cyclopes whose aid was decisive in the war against the Titans.

...........

I couldn't find a specific use of "blast", but it seems the word is used in a lot of writings instead of the word wind.

Aeolus, the god of winds, Greek aetai, 'wind', from aether, 'ether'. Plato has Socrates explain that the poets call the winds 'air-blasts', aetai (the usual Greek term for wind was anemos).
........
Homer, Odyssey 5. 291 ff (trans. Shewring) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) :
"Poseidon massed the clouds, clutched his trident and churned the ocean up; he roused all the blasts of all the Winds and swathed earth and sea alike in clouds; down from the sky rushed the dark. Euros (East Wind) and Notos (South Wind) clashed together, the stormy Zephyros (West Wind) and the sky-born billow-driving Boreas (North Wind)."

I'd always thought they were named after weather phenomena, but it seems they all tie in to greek mythology in some way. The above came from wikipedia and some sites on greek mythology(www.theoi.com was one).
cheers,
chili
