I am new to buells and have a question. I recently bought an 00 X1 and it has what appears to be a safety switch on it. On the right side of the handle bars just inboard of the control assy there is a block that says MPS on it. Connected to this is a lanyard much like you would see on a jet ski or boat. It has a clip on the end of it which I assume is to be connected to the rider and if the rider should become disconnected from the bike would act as a kill switch. The question I have is after looking around at some of the pictures on here I don't see any other bikes that have this, was it stock? Is it some sort of requirement for some racing? The previous owner did some mods that are obvious, streetfighter exhaust, forcewinder intake, race ecm, power commander II, carbon trim on the right side of tank, carbon rear fender, and a catch can. I don't really know what all he did though as I bought it off a dealer and they didn't know. I am just trying to figure out how much this guy put into it and what he may have used it for, thanks

May the kill switch was used for drag racing?

I know some strips require them, IIRC.

Not stock, but nice to have even for street riding if you ask me.

My local dragstrip requires such a lanyard on anything going quicker that 10.99 or faster that 120.
So anything approaching a stock air-cooled Buell does not technically need it, but I would like to have one anyway.
Let me know if you take it off and want to dispose of it!

No I don't want to get rid of it. Just wondering does this mean that there is a good chance he had done more mods than meets the eye? I mean I know that sometimes people but 5 pt harnesses in stock mustangs and such just for looks but I am trying to figure out what may have been done to it prior to my ownership without totally tearing it apart

It may have been put on by someone just curious about what the bike would run.
FWIW, I had one that used a rubber cap on a Suzuki years ago. Used it only a few times, never had a bit of trouble for years, and suddenly started having problems once the revs hit a certain point. Took me about a year to figure out that the rubber had deteriorated enough that it would let the switch open at high revs but not be a problem at the low end.
Short version -- Look there first if you have any issues.
I also always worried about someone thinking it would be cute to take off with it. Never had a problem, but you might consider where the bike's going to be sitting.

Yeah I didn't think about that but I guess it could be kinda used like a theft resistant thing? I mean if I take it with me then it may be harder to take, unless they just lift it into a truck anyways

Motorcycle Performance Specialties http://www.mpsracing.com/. I want to add one of those to my bikes.
