Ok this might come as a dumb question but is there any way to turn on 4 way flashers or hazard lights on my 2000 X1? I got pulled over last night for not having a tail light. The trooper followed me to a wal mart and had me try to fix it. He said if I could turn my 4 way flashers on he could let me go but if not I would have to call and have someone pick me and the bike up.

No 4 way or "hazard lights" on a Buell.

You "can" re-wire the harness to make all blinker lights to turn on, but there's no switch to make it happen.

thanks, I just bought the thing and didn't know much about it. I guess I will have to assemble a small tool kit and keep it on me from now on

Obviously your cops out there don't know much about motorcycles.
To my knowledge NO M/C manufacturer equips there product with 4ways.
There's probably after-market setups for some models, but most have to be rigged.
Cop bikes have them but only with police special set up.

Am I right or wrong?

In a word:

Wrong.

EVERY Harley-Davidson has 4 ways. Left turn, left thumb button. Right turn, right thumb button. Flashers, push and hold both at the same time.

I believe many, if not most, BMWs have the feature as well. Not sure if the Bimmer has the triangle button or if it's tied into the turn signals...but I'd swear I've seen them.

My Westwinds have them. I just went and checked.

If my S2T had them, I don't remember, but I think it might've.

The 1995 and 1996 Buells have 4-way hazard flashers.

All Buells should have 4 way and auto cancel turn signals. ITS A SAFETY THING!!!!!! How hard is that??? They did in 95 and 96 but then they decided to go with different controls and lost that feature. Please bring them back. Can anyone tell me why they don't or only that they did?? I just don't understand! Anyone care to let me in on why?

95 and 96 S2s use HD hand controls, and HD flasher units (called a TSM - turn signal module - or TSSM - turn signal security module - these days). These flasher units are NOT just a flasher relay, but look nearly like another ECM as they have to read mileage (to auto-cancel) and currently interconnect with the ECM for the security disable feature. That was when they were using 1" handlebars.

On later bikes, Buell switched to a more European style 7/8" handlebar and controls that they still use today. That brought a different switch housing vendor, and the left thumb turn signals.

My guess is now, 7/8" bars are much more universal in the sportbike arena, so they're sticking with them. Again, my guess.

A time-based autocancel would be a nice upgrade...but distance based is much better IMO because it won't cancel while you're sitting at a red light. I'd say an additional button (with the "hazard triangle") for 4 ways might be a worthwhile add-on...but honestly unless I'm acting as a ride captain, I nearly NEVER miss having 4 ways.

I understand why the 95 and 96 bikes had them because of H-D controls and I understand the difference in bar sizes. So there are not any 7/8 controls that have a auto cancel or 4 ways? I just don't understand why a company with so much forward thinking and ingenuity doesn't think that 4 ways and auto cancel signals are good SAFETY features to have on its bikes.

I honestly don't see too much of a reason to have hazard lights on a bike. At least I didn't before this happened. I mean I did fix the problem and it was actually done correctly instead of me just riding the next 50 miles with 4 ways on but it sure would have been easier to be able to just flip them on and ride away.

Interesting thing about the old auto canceling turn signals.
Pretty neat little circuit on the old S2's.
There is a signal wire coming from the "mechanical" speedo that is connected to the turn signal module.
My speedo drive broke on the way home today and the self canceling broke!
I had completely forgot about the signal wire..

My S2 doesn't have 4 ways, I tried it once and they didn't work. Gonna have to check into that..

Now I'm gonna have to try them on my S2...although, it doesn't have the little triangle logo that the later HDs have, on the turn signal buttons....

So JOE

Just because I want 4 ways and auto cancel signals I should buy a full dress bike. That makes great sense.

I am still waiting on someone to tell me why Buell would not want them on their bikes?

I guess because of the added cost. It is like ABS brakes. The additional cost does not justify the benefit. Get a BMW if you want all safety features, including 4-ways, while avoiding a full dresser.
Btw I think that Buell cannot afford to continue the no-ABS policy. I would bet money that it will be optional within the next 2 years.

I'd guess cost and complexity. Remember Erik's philosophy: If a part can't/doesn't do three or four different jobs...find another part.

Brad, which wire controls the self canceling turn signals, is it that white one? I would really like to get rid of that feature.

I used 4 way flashers one time in 27 years of riding and that was at Homecoming when I was on the side of the interstate in rush hour trying to recover the contents of my saddle bags. I had an interesting conversation with one of Milwaukee's finest.

Thanx all, I'm educated.

In the future I'll be looking more closely for this feature.
Still however I don't see much use for them.it's too easy to push the bike out of harms way and simply call or send messenger for help if needed.

I do feel brainier though.

Ryan, if you want good handling, light weight, good power to weight ratio and affordable price you have to give up things. If you decide to make the mods please post up would like to follow along.

+1 on Brad - it's a white wire, green tracer.

And I checked - I do have 4-ways on the 95 S2.

Well I guess you could look at it as he was a tool..... but he could have given me a ticket, and it is an actual safety concern at night. I know that I have had friends in their cars be parked until they could get it towed etc. for the same thing. I was actually impressed with him. I mean yeah it was annoying at the time but looking back he could have just wrote me a 70 dollar ticket and parked me, so good on him I say
