Hello all. Looking at Buells again and found a S1W for a reasonable price. My commute now is about 23 miles but we are moving 10 miles further out of town. I had a '97 Cyclone and I remember it being comfortable and one of the smoothest bikes I had ever ridden at speed. Should I consider the S1W or keep looking for a Cyclone, S3 or XB. I always liked the looks of the S1W's but back then they were way expensive. Bill | ||

As far as I know they are very comfy since you sit in them instead of on them. Hope I'm not confused about the model. Anyway, everyone I have known that has had one loved them! If it's cheap then jump on it before some yahoo chops it up for some lowrider project! BC Steve | ||

The S1s are not comfortable. the seat is basicaly a 2x4 with vinyl over it! It rides and feels like a dirtbike. If you want comofort get a M2 or S2/3. | ||

Bill, basically what Dan said. I ride my S1W to work (about 19 miles one way) from time to time but it is a violent ride compared to my XB or S2. Don't get me wrong, it is fun. | ||

Ditto on the "fun factor"...but even Erik admitted it came with only a "one-cheek-seat". I love mine - refer to it as my troublemaker - but it is definitely not the bike I get on if I need comfort  | ||

I would like to step in here and suggest getting an M2 instead. I rode my friend's M2 and it was one of the most friendly/fun bikes I ever tried. Other suggestions for commuting: XB9cx KLR650 XB12X My X1 kicks ass for that too. | ||

I've found my modified S1 seat (reshaped, no gel or other magic goos) to be more comfortable on long rides than the fat M2 saddle my bike started out with. Have ridden the bike to Las Vegas (425ish miles) and West Yellowstone area (330 or so). The M2 seat had a tendency to make my upper hams burn after a while, I can move around more on the S1 seat. I think it's more of what will fit you, the S1W has a fairly upright riding position but many people don't like the seat. If you prefer a plush seat look for an M2, S2, or S3. my $.02 | ||

YES, get the S1W! But, get rid of the stock seat! Spend the money on a Corbin seat. The standard seat really, really stinks ... I have a Corbin Twin Tail seat and it makes a world of difference vs stock. Without it -- I wouldn't want to do 30 miles regularly, which would be a shame. Upgrade the seat and you've got a bike you'll want to ride all the time! Comfortably. S1 Corbin seats show up on eBay here and there ... get one. | ||

Yeah I remember the seat on my M2 now that yo guys mention it. Good for about 30 min and then pain. There weren't many options back then. I got into drag racing while I had my Buell and it just wasn't a good match at the time. Bought Japanese for the speed(We had just had our first kid)and low expense to go fast. I remember the S1w's in the showroom and I think the dealers were asking $15K for some of them. | ||

Though the stock seat sucks, you shouldn't have any problems with an S1W as a commmuter. I'd say buy it and have fun! Should you desire more comfort, you may want to check into a twin tale w/Corbin seat on it. | ||

trust me, your ass gets used to it, especially if its the only bike youve got... Yeah...but you already *have* a corbin, lol. Thinking about it, I've probably done a few full-tank-days on the bike without too much discomfort, but the sides of the tail section do start to poke through the stock seat pretty quickly (I have a solo tail). My issue is, I'm 6'4", 34" inseam, and nearly 37" monkey-arms. I don't ride my S1W, I *wear* it. The stock bars bunched me up too much, so I found an old set of Buell race bars (think crossroads) - lower and further out is MUCH better for me now. It'll let you commute with it. It won't be a Buick as far as comfort goes...but it'll more than make that up to you in the FUN factor. | ||

I commute 90+ miles on my S1. I have to dance around on the seat after about 60 or so. Great bike but the seat is a leather covered 2 X 6. Retro fit with a gel insert and you'll be fine. | ||

Sorry for the confusion....I was thinking of the S2. For some reason I always seem to confuse the two in my mind. I guess I need to find an S2 for myself to fix that confusion. I do love my S3T though it's probably feeling like the red-headed stepchild next to my Uly. BC Steve | ||

GTO - what's the VIN on that bike? There's a sequence that IDs it as a White, as opposed to a regular S1. I see thunderstorm heads, manta tank...says "White Lightning" to me, but I thought they all had either white frames/wheels (white bikes) or nuke blue frame/wheels (orange bikes). I didn't know any White Lightnings (especially white ones) had black frames/wheels....but I've been wrong before, lol. And yep, that's the twintail seat. Solo tail stops right around the same place as the rear axle.  | ||

hey rat, there are many different color options, i have a molten orange one with black frame and have seen black/black, silver/blue and i'm sure there are more. | ||

Sleez - hm. Never seen a black frame S1W before, pretty cool. I know this was back when they had the "boutique" color ordering process though, so I guess there are all sorts of color combos out there. Only things I've ever seen on an S1, though, are the stock charcoal frame/wheels, the white and the nuke blue on an S1W. Cool, I'm done for today. I try and only learn one thing a day, so I don't fill up too fast, LOL. | ||

They had black frame/white panels... I have seen a few at homecoming... I have black frame with orange panels. I liked the White and Black a lot. Always wanted to see a white frame black paneled bike... not sure they ever made that one though | ||
