OK here goes,
was on a poker run today with alot of friends here in lake charles. Let a good friend ride my buell (1999 carbon edition), which was pristine! Well to make a long story short he dumped it.
front wheel is fubar, front rotor too, tail piece is not fixable, possible front forks, unknown on frame damage, swing arm possibly, trashed carbon fiber bottom fairing, trashed handle bars, trashed black side boxes, trashed helmet, and unknown other damage...
for the moment i am riding his 110 cubic inch rev-tech 6 speed chopper....
not too worried about the bike and he is ok just minor scrapes and cuts...
should i have him fix it or make him buy another one just like it?
I am not mad at all and would let him ride it again any time....just saying that to make sure everyone understands i am not angry....accidents happen and i understand that....
just not sure what to do...
ps if anyone has any of these bits and pieces email me at cueball.tech@gmail.com so i can let him know

I feel for ya, I'd be getting a new one as the frame could be damaged.
Good to hear your mates OK tho.

Is this the scoot you had for sale about two weeks ago?

Nobody rides my bike or the 'ole lady because some might want to throw a rod in one or the other.

He should man up and ask you how YOU want it handled.

Well he did man up, I have his 2001 revtech 110 cubic inch santee chopper, and will probably own it! Sucks about the buell but, I told him "you wreck my bike, I own yours!" And he is ok with it...

yeah as much as i like the chopper, god i miss the way the buell handled! the chopper handles like a tank! anybody got an idea what it would cost to replace a carbon kevlar edition with another one just like it....not counting the miles...
plus it was my first buell and i worked hard to save the cash to buy it....kinda hard to put that kinda cash away as a single father with full custody...and its hard to put a value on stuff like that...or am i wrong for thinking that way

and jramsey, yes this was the bike i was considering selling, he was interested in buying it...i told him you can ride it, but just remember, if you wreck it you own it. lots of people heard me tell him that and they all agree that he now owns it...and he has taken the attitude that if i want it fixed he will make it right, or he can buy/trade for it.
not sure i want a "fixed" bike though...never be the same ya know....

After working in cycle shops for years I can't tell you the number of horror stories I've heard after the "I let my friend ride my bike" line. Many injuries and a couple of deaths. I've only ever let one person ride my bike in 35 yrs of riding and he was a guy I raced with for many years. (Ultra Qualified)Words of wisdom-Don't lend out your scoot

+1 What Lang said.

Let this be a lesson for everyone.

The "retail" value of my bike doesn't even come close to the cash I would have to get to give it up.

Glad he's ok and his wallet is too.

I have always considered riding someone else's motorcycle to be too much like dancing with another man's wife. If you don't like the experience, too much diplomacy is required to keep from causing ill will. If you like the experience too much . . .all sorts of bad things can happen . . .I am too far into my retirement comfort zone to contend with the consequences . . .be it just finding room for the newly desired experience or the chaos and trauma that inevitably will result from the whole acquisition thing. Don't ask me how I know . . .

My moto is"loan you girlfriend not your bike, she can defend herself but your bike can't!"

As Langperf said, all the horror stories that link to "I loaned my bike to my buddy" could make a novel. they almost all end in tragedy to one degree or another...come to think of it so does the girlfriend thing ...aww hell don't do it guys!

over 22 years on harley and buells here. Letting friends romp on your ride is a NO NO. They must commit to replace if dumped with a quick check on MY STATED AMOUNT. Only the closest frieds have taken mine down the block. One came back pushing with a cop on his ass, no damage done! Other two came back scared as hell!! MONEY TALKS BULLSHIT WALKS, NO ONE RIDES FOR FREE! YOU DUMP, YOU BUY AND THEN SOME!

Yes too many stories about buddy recking buddys bikes. the practice is not for poor people or a weak heart.

Regardless....

My cousin let his buddy ride his high powered Hayabusa and the guy ended up in the morgue. All in a span of 20 seconds. Sad but true story. He then had to fight a lawsuit for years...
Sometimes it is hard to say no to friends but it is the wise thing to do.

Ive let one other badwebber ride my bike, we were trying to diagnose a sound. My dad has also ridden my buell, but he knows how to ride.

I dont let people ride it at all, not worth the potential hassle.

I myself stick to what I was taught. Don't let your buddy barrow you girl or your bike... they might throw a rod in either one of them!

If you were considering selling it, I'm guessing that you either were already a peace with not owning it or felt like you had to get rid of it for some reason. If it's the first option, let him know the purchase price, hand over the title, and let him decide what to do with it and how to pay for it. If it's the second option and you found a way to keep what you worked hard to get, involve your buddy in getting it back to new. It can either be by paying prices for new parts and getting it over with or it can be him spending hours trolling over ebay looking for the right parts. He certainly needs to make sure you have a ride in the interim, but taking title to his bike will just mean both of you lost your pride and joy in the event and neither one is satisfied.
A second bike will never be like the first. A good shop will be able to tell you what parts you really need and whether or not the frame has a problem.
I was about to say "At least it's almost winter" but that doesn't seem to apply in your case.

Am I missing something? Wouldn't insurance cover this??? Replacing it may be hard, but you may find something similar that you like.

P.S. Tubers are WAY cooler then choppers

We had a buell stolen and they said we could buy it back as salvage for 3800.00 and we laughed at them and said keep it and give us our 7000.00 which paid for it!
And we got the 7 so f@#$ the insurance company!

Part it out. Auction the motor to a redneck. Offer up the rest on the Badweb classifieds, parts go fast here. What's left over you can auction or scrap, donate to a badwebber who crashed worse than you, etc.

While you're doing this keep riding the Santee. When the dust settles your friend will owe you a lot less than he does now. He can make up the difference so you come out with a reasonable amount as if you'd sold the X1.

Then find another X1, carbon, white lightning, racing stripe--many to choose from. The market is soft, winter is coming, you can find a good deal.

This way everybody wins... you keep your friend, he keeps his big-dollar chopper, you'll be back on an X1 before you know it. Just think of all the knowledge you stand to gain with all that wrenching to part out your CF.

My .01...
