Been tring to find out the best way to lower a 2002 M2. Feel getting a stock M2L shock is best. Can I buy a new M2L shock ? anyone got a used one? Or should I just extend the shock mount? Anyone here lower there M2? What did u do ? Knowledge vault is lame on many topic's so I post here!! Think Works, Penske not capable to lower ? | ||

Max, I lowered a '98 M2 by 1" when it was new. It involved removing and sawing the shock bracket most of the way thru from the front, leaving ~ 1/4" connecting the bracket. Then I opened / bent the bracket at the saw line opening the gap to ~ 1/4" in the front. This effectively moved the front shock bolt hole to the rear by 1/2". Next was to prepare the saw cut for welding on both sides. Followed by a TIG weld by a competent welder. This worked well, and later I did the same thing on my '99 S3. (The location of the saw cut was between the upper and lower engine mounting bolts), I do have handwritten notes on the procedure. I believe 1" lowering is all you can achieve without having the tire grind away when in full compression. Another way would be to make a new lower bracket from mild steel with the shock mounting hole 1/2" to the rear. | ||

Maxbuell There is some stuff on that in the FAQ thread in the M2 section(difference between M2 & M2L). The lows also had different forks. I'm still a bit confused, but I'm used to it. There was another thread in the M2 section I will find if I can. I'm sure it's all here somewhere, but finding it may be challenging. I'll see if I can find that other thread. Rotzaruck! | ||

I'm not sure what the shock length is on your M2, but I've seen a few Penske shocks in the preban length on ebay as well as the new 14.7" length. I had a 98 M2 that I lowered by sliding the forks in the trees. I wouldn't advise that unless you want a very twitchy ride. That was back when I converted it as much as I could into a Pro-Thunder series carving machine. | ||

Or, you can just modify your existing front shock mount like this:     This will lower the rear of your bike almost 1 inch... | ||

It can be done easily without widening the gap also. The swingarm has a 2:1 lever ratio, so just move the hole rearward half the distance you wish to lower the back of the bike.  | ||

I used to make an extension for them..... could make one up and take pics. Allows for 5 minute install and removal, road tested and witnessed by chase. Rode it for thousands of miles, loved it. | ||

Now if it were to work out that one of you long legged types with a low was in the mood to do some swapping about with a short stubby legged type like me with a high............ If Dwardo decides he doesn't want to do a swap we talked about possibly doing, I would be another willing participant. My XB has gotten in the mood to be foul, so I'm thinking the M2 may be up and running quicker. If I made a swap with somebody, I sure would like to do it BEFORE I put those forks on it. I've got both shocks, just need low forks. I figure if I lower it an inch, by the time I fall a dozen times, I've saved a whole foot of falling. Thats significant. Rotzaruck |
