I am trying to replace my rear Showa shock on my 2000 X1 lightning with a shorter one. I have the correct bracket for the shorter shock. The problem is the old bracket had threaded holes for the bolts and the new one is not threaded so the two 3/8 x 5 1/4 bolts that hold the mounts and go thru the front of the engine cases are too short. anyone know where I can get longer bolts say 5 1/2 inches. I already tried the local HD dealer but all they could find in the parts list were the same bolts. I was going to try an auto parts store for some grade 8 bolts but the bolts also have a triangle on the head which as best I can tell from my internet research is that it is a 'close tolerance' bolt. Will regular Grade 8 bolts work or will they not fit tight enough and mess up the engine cases? If not where can I find some longer bolts. Thanks | ||

You should be able to look in the back of the Buell parts book and find charts listing the bolts, and then you can get a part number for the proper length bolts. Get ready for yet another argument, but I personally only use the Buell fasteners for high-stress critical items like this. Other than this statement, I'm staying out of it. I don't think the recall kit came with different bolts, but I'll check. | ||

Yup, the recall kit came with new nuts, but not new bolts. You might search the archives, this has been an issue before. |
