Hi guys, Bonehead move of the week… I recently switched over to the Y bracket. I was warned to make sure to grind one corner down to metal so that the rectifier / regulator could get a good ground. I did as best I could with an ancient rusted file I inherited from my grandmother. Well, yesterday my bike wouldn’t keep a charge. My wife had to jump me twice. So my question is: Is it possible that the bike just needs a better ground or do you think I’ve screwed up and blown the rectifier / regulator? I’m not very good with bike electrics and have never managed to figure out a meter… I was going to put a full charge on the battery, then take everything apart (again) and use a dremil to really clean up that connection. Although… It might be a better test to just jump it off the car again after I’ve cleaned up the connection to see if I get the same problem. Suggestions? Thanks! Randy | ||

Randymoser: Maybe this will help ??? BASIC TOOL: A cheap ELECTRONIC VOM METER ... Allows you to check Continutie/charge voltage and does not load CKT. ... If you have a bad connection(same as a high resistance open), ie:loose battery terminals, loose/bad engine frame ground, and plug in connections loose/dirty the charging system tries to force electrons thru these connections which causes HIGH HEAT which burns up what ever is the weakest component and/or all ... | ||

I don't know. It sounds sort of complex. want to come over and do it for me? There's a can of Black Label in it for you  I just don't like electricity, fire or other supernatural forces! R. | ||

I wasn't able to get a good ground to the regulator when switching over, so I hooked up a ground wire directly to the regulator. Problem solved. | ||

"I just don't like electricity, fire or other supernatural forces! " Does that mean you don't like women either? Seriously, if you're going to work on it, get the right tools to do the job correctly. Get a multimeter -- they're even at Wally World and have instructions so there's no excuse! | ||
