I had exactly the same problem and I ended up replacing the starter and it works just perfect now. Before, I cleaned the contacts and pulled the solenoid and cleaned it but the replace of the starter fixed it and I found a rebuilt one for about $100.

It only took a couple hours. It may help to have a friend help (I did not). You will need the new primary gasket and a new starter gasket. Getting the primary cover back on and keeping the primary gasket in place without wrecking it is the hardest but patience rules. I just followed the manuals directions and now have a great starter and NO LEAKS. If you need anymore help just ask. Good luck.

small dowel rods in case screwholes......
gasket held on with dowels....
primary slides over dowels, is supported by dowels so that you can get the chain over adjuster shoe....
then the primary cover can be mated to the case....
remove dowels separately, replacing with case screws

Try replacing the starter relay first.

Mine had this same thing happen for years and it was fixed just by replacing the relay.

I guess it was still working but a little lazy.
