I've never seen this one before.... Bike is an Ice White Pearl 98 S1W. Current mileage, just a hair under 5100 (I know...I need to ride it more). Original tank (clearcoated-over Buell badges) peeled, bubbled, and looked overall like a leprosy patient. So, I got a replacement, installed around 2200 miles (bike had 1100 on it when I bought it in 2006). Replacement appears to be one of the "goodwill" tanks - it was never used, brand new, and had/has the raised plastic Buell lettering. Also Ice White Pearl and from all I can see, it's factory-painted. This one isn't peeling or bubbling, it's doing what looks like a crackle-glaze. Everywhere. Top, bottom, sides...there are no breaks in the paint, but it is definitely NOT smooth anymore. Still shiny...not smooth. Breather vent works, bike sits in a garage, no direct sunlight, and this summer (when I started noticing this weirdness) no bike cover. Washed with only hose water, no chemicals other than Harley Gloss or Mother's wax, applied by hand, not buffer. Anyone seen this before? I guess this winter, the original tank is getting repainted locally.... |
