What is the deal can you put a 180 on a S3 with out PM wheels?? Stock is a 170 is there a clearance problem???

I just tried a size up on my x1, I had to just test fit. It worked well! If it didn't i be selling it

I've got a 180 on the back of my '98 S1. I'm running a S3 hugger and standard wheels with no clearance problems.

The PM wheels are 5.5" wide and will fit a 180 perfectly. The cast alloy wheels are 5.0" wide and should not be used with anything wider than a 170 tire.

If you understand the geometry of tire and chassis you will find a larger tire is not a benefit in cornering. For example, the R1 uses a 190-50/17 for production, when set up for racetrack it wears a 180-55/17.
It seem that the bike dances in and out of corners with less effort.
Now, acceleration traction is a different matter, bigger footprint=better hook-up.
Your S3 was deemed better performing with the 170 tire which is in some cases harder to find than the ubiquitous 180-55, but the bike likes it better in the conditions it was designed for.

I understand that after 46000 mi.,about 8 tires,the bike handles fine (I RIDE PRETTY HARD)with either size rear tire.I have a 170 on now but am looking for a d208 in 180 to replace.They PHATEN up the back nice.JMO.B.B.

I run a stock 170 on my S1W.

My S2 runs a 180 on Marchesini wheels.

Handling is not "greatly affected", despite what many will try to convince you. Yes, it seems to be slower on tip-in...but that bike is more of a touring bike for me so a wider contact patch on the highway is a good thing. Don't worry - I still carve corners with it - but it gets waay more highway miles than the solo-seat S1W LOL.

For me, the ready-availability of a 180 tire at just about any store (in case of a flat on the road somewhere) far outweighs whatever minor handling difference there may be.

I bought my 02 S3T last year and the guy I bought it from had a 180 contiforce on it. I wore that thing out in no time and I replaced it with a 180/55 Bridgestone BT-021. It works fine. I am not the most aggressive rider but this is my fourth Buell and I haven't noticed any handling problems at all. I'll try a 170 after i wear this Bridge out cuz I've noticed there is no difference in width to speak of. So anyway, there are no clearance issues or cornering issues that I've experienced. It just throws my speedometer off a little.

Thanks for the response. I just replaced my 170 with a 180 no problems. I can not see a difference. I went with a mitchelin piolit Roads 2. We will see how many miles I can get out of it it.

I love the PR2s on my S2. Not enough miles to gauge lifespan yet, but handling (wet and dry) is very nice.

I've been running 180's on my S3T and S1W for years. I'm not sure you could really notice the difference unless you swapped back and forth a few times.

Woo hoo!!!!, been waiting for some of the guys here to try out the PR2's and give us a review. Let us know how you like them please.
I've run the 170 until my last tire swap, the Pirelli Scorpion Syncs don't seem to be available in the 170 so I'm running 180. So that's like... huh... seven years.

So I don't know if it's tire response, could be a number of factors, but I had a hard time getting the rhythm right in my favorite canyon since I got the tires, but honestly haven't spent much time in the saddle this year either.

So not to hijack... glad you found fitment to be okay, let us know how the new tires work out for you.
