My '98 S3T drains oil back to the crankcase so fast, it's nearly impossible to check the level. I overfilled it the other day (Sunday, after riding with a bunch of lunatics), and when I rode some 40-odd additional miles, I had oil all over the rear wheel, tire, pulley, belt, etc. The filler plug had been pushed out of the oil tank, after all the extra oil had been pumped back into the tank. I know that this is a common problem with these engines, but this seems extreme. Do y'all think I've got a bad oil pump? I'll look in my FSM, but while I'm asking dumb questions, is there a check valve in the line to prevent drainback, or are the scavenge pump gears supposed to do that? Larry | ||

I suspect most of the drain back is through the scavenging pump hose from the oilbag. You have to check oil level after the ride, not before them, to check it properly, and never overfill. The symptoms you've experienced have happened to many that have come before you. My dipstick launched about 30 feet in the air once when I was warming my bike up with the seat off. It took me a while to find it. Never overfill. | ||

There is almost always a slow leak at said check valve...some slow, some not so. Always check the level immediately after shutting off and at operating temperature. Some say to check with the motor running, but that's going a bit far. | ||

Nope, none too far at all. Think: The oil level only matters while the engine is running, right? So, set the oil level with the bike running! Note: This is also why we check the oil level while hot! | ||

And the check valve isn't working well, but it's not worth fixing in my opinion, unless you are there for something else. It won't hurt anything. I just pull in from a ride, check oil, shut it off. Unless there's a puddle the next time you go to ride, you're safe. | ||

My X1 is and allways will be a bike on the rag. If it sits for more than a week or two it makes a puddle(I now leave a diaper under it when I know it's gonna be a while till it gets ridden again. I am sick to death of chasing leaks when they are that small and slow, so a diaper works for me. |
