I have a line in on a 95 Signature Series S2...

It has about 55K miles... but has been KEPT up...

Is this HIGH mileage... do i need to plan a engine REBUILD due to mileage... or SHOULD it be ok...???

Thanks,
Matt

If it runs fine do not worry about it. Talk to Ebutch, he has over 100K on his and never been rebuilt.

Tubers, as you are probably aware, require preventive maintenance, they are just as reliable as any other bike as long as you take care of them.

Matt is this the one on ebay for 2,900??

Matt, either that frame was replaced with a 96 frame or it was painted. It looks like it was repainted to me. Just something to look at if you get a chance to see it in person.

It is impossible to tell without looking at it, hearing it and riding it.

It looks like the entire bike was rebuilt. That would bother me because you do not know who did it (ask him for records of work done).

I would almost rather buy a bike that I know needs work. That is just me, every used bike I buy I usually tear it down to frame (not the motor unless it needs work) then I rebuild it. The only bike I did not have to touch was my 96 S2T but I bought it from a BadWeb member and it was show room condition when I got it.

In the last year I have come across 2 S2s that I considered but did not buy. One had a tacky paint job (no problem) and the motor was rebuild (no problem there because I knew who did it) he was selling to buy a bagger (that I have a problem with LOL). He did not know much about the bike and he wanted 4K. For 4K I want an original bike or something that has all the original parts so I do not want to hunt them down. I passed..... The other one was advertised for 4,500 and it was down on both sides hard. Headers looked like crap and it 96 wheels on a 95 frame so I imagine he sold the pm wheels at one point. It was not loved but it was the one I wanted. I offered him 2K for it and he came down to 2,500 but would not budge so I passed. That S2 ended up being chopped.

The 95 S2 I did buy had all the original parts to include exhaust. It is well ridden but I am replacing neck bearings, wheel bearing, isolators, all cables, exhaust and carb gaskets and am getting it repainted. I had to do a little body work (still doing it) and cleaning and polishing. It will not be a show bike but at least I will know the bike (I learn something different about the S2 everyday) and I have the satisfaction that it will go another 20K with minor preventative work.

Check the wheels as well.... Looks like they were repainted or something.

If you see it and ride it and it feels good then you may get a great deal. You have bought and owned enough Buells to know what to look for.

Matt, be careful! Once you own a S2 you may start to forget about your other bikes....

We have a 12 step program for S2 ownership. The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Frank,

Engine was painted NOT rebuilt.

Frame is ORIGINAL just powder coated BLACK.

Original rims.. but he had them stripped (white) and then polished...

Tell me what you think.... would you do it..

Needs NOTHING except a starter relay in the NEAR future... everything else including ALL fluids are NEW.. including NEW tires.

Did he send you pics? If you can send them to me at f_skinner@yahoo.com I would like to take a look.

I really can not tell you what to do. I like a S2 close to original condition but that is just me. Seems like a lot of stuff has been changed. However if you tear it down you can always have the frame repainted and the wheels powder coated. It is really up to you. There is nothing on that bike that can not be repaired with a little time and money. If you are comfortable doing your own work it might be worth it.

Starter relays are cheap and you can get them at an auto parts store for a couple of dollars. I wonder why he has not replaced it?

What about the signature series timing cover and documentation?

Frank,

His camera took a crap... he is trying to get one...

He does not drive it much anymore at all... It has the signature cover and ALL documentation.

Well Matt, you might have found the deal of the century.... If you buy it, or should I say when?

Make sure you send me the info from the bike so we can include you among the rest of the elite in the S2 registry.

I agree with Frank...once you have an S2, it'll be the envy of all your other bikes (as they sit in the garage, wondering when you're going to ride them next). I'd always liked the look of the S2 (OK, wasn't too fond of the square headlight at first but it grew on me), but I was totally unprepared for how much more about the bike I've fallen in love with.

Also like Frank, without putting hands on it, I hesitate to suggest a course of action. S2s are great motorcycles. Paint and powdercoat can be changed easily enough. You say it isn't too far from you - go see it, feel it, look at it in person, take it for a ride if he's willing.

I have three Buells - the Uly is utilitarian, functional. Still fun to ride, but less of an emotional connection. The S1W is a troublemaker, plain and simple - the "angry teen", LOL. The S2 and I have conversations every time I ride it. It speaks to me, and - the best part - it listens to me, too. It just *does* the right stuff, every time I ride it.

Matt, good deal. 4K seems to be the average price. I paid 4,500 for my S2T (worth every penny and more) and 3,700 for my S2.

My 95 is all original even down the exhaust, also had 20K on it. I am going thru it and replacing things like bearings, cables, tires etc....

I think you know what to look for. 20K for a 13 year old bike is nothing. I look forward to seeing some pics...
