When did this come about (for tubers that is, I just started seeing them on them)?

Where do I get them?

Finally, how do I install them?

Tubers in general.

Spools are what the rear stand goes on, on most jappers and race bikes.

Never saw them on either myself.

But, recently I have seen people with the newer swingarm have them installed.

You could weld something on the bottom of the swing arm to bolt spools on.

Looks like a plain-ol HD sprocket, powdercoated black.

Pit Bull has weld-on spool brackets, fairly cheap. http://www.pit-bull.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Scr een=CTGY&Store_Code=PBMSA&Category_Code=spool_kits $16.95 for the mounts, and $16.95 for the 8mm spools.

I've got some bolted to my steel arm. All it took was a couple little holes.
