On a ride yesterday and everything seemed fine until we pulled off the freeway for gas and there was no neutral light. Oh well, the bike seemed OK and would start with the clutch pulled in and the good part of the ride lay ahead, so I kept going with the group. When we hit the twisties, when going up and down in the gears, the clutch started having more and more freeplay and by the next stop it would not disengage completely even when pulled all the way in. Adjusted the clutch cable to take the freeplay out and there was still a little creep even with the clutch all the way in, but it would shift with some hesitation.
Any suggestion as to what I should investigate? Could the two things be related?

Does it still have all the original clutch plates? If so, you might be experiencing the infamous "spring plate disintegration" failure, in which the internal spring plate assembly gradually comes apart sending brass rivet parts into the clutch pack and trans oil.

When this device starts failing, clutch operation becomes erratic as the spring plates bind and shift around.

Well, it could be this or something el$e in the clutch/tranny that is the problem.

I'd start by checking inside the clutch cover to see if the clutch is loose on the shaft. Then check the front belt drive sprocket for main shaft bearing wear or noise/crunchiness.

If OK so far, then take the primary cover off and take the clutch apart. If the internal spring plate is indeed coming apart, discard the stock plates and install a Barnett clutch pack. This has a better designed spring plate assy for street riders. Racers might want to leave it out.

Check American Sport Bike or other BWB sponsors for availability.

The neutral light is most likely a separate issue. I'd check the bulb first. If it is OK then troubleshoot the neutral switch which is located behind the front drive belt sprocket. Remove the front sprocket cover for access.

Do you have the service manual? All these troubleshooting steps are detailed there.

Don't think so, had a Barnett clutch and spring installed a couple of years ago, less than 20K miles. Would that affect the neutral light?
