What does the P.M. stand for? Why do they seem so desired? What did they cost originally? Can they be found new/used? | ||

Performance Machine....or Machined. It's the manufacturer of the wheel I believe. They are polished aluminum, not painted alloy. I believe it was a $1500 upgrade from the factory. Yes, there are a couple sets on eBay right now. (Message edited by brinnutz on September 11, 2008) | ||

I am not certain but I think the PM stands for polished metal. I think they are desired because they have a much shiner finish then the later model rims. Not sure of the cost but I do see them from time to time on Ebay and here on the classisfed board. | ||

They are Performance Machine, who makes a wide variety of motorcycle wheels, and brake calipers, and components. Really nice quality stuff, the early Buells I beleive up to 98, had a PM front brake caliper. Dean | ||

17 x 5.5 Rear. 17 x 3.5 Front. As a set they are about 7 lbs. lighter than the cast wheels. Hydroformed/Spun wheels are soft and ding easily compared to a heat treated cast wheel. You can tell when they were manufactured by the last four numbers(date code) after the size. 17 x 3.5 00 09 PM would be Sept. of 2000. | ||

I've heard the opposite... that they were heavier than the three spoke Buell tuber wheels. This might have more to do with the rear being 1/2" wider, but that's the info that's floated around for a few years... as well as their reputation for being easily dinged. | ||

I was new to Buells then I didn't ask at the time. They belonged to a customer and he was switching over to the PMs from the OEM cast. | ||

PM = Polish ME That's funny!!! As I recall, Performance Machine wheels were a $725 option, but they were $1500 to buy them separately. (For the life of me I can't think of where that flier ended up after several moves.) I've always like the looked of polished metal, so they are worth the effort to me. It's a nice offset on a black bike. I'm also a fair weather rider so I don't have to clean up water spots that often (except for tonight). I ended up with a set recently that were left outside, and have become pitted. Even then, they look great with just a little time with a Mothers polish wheel. | ||

The PMs are definitely heavier than the cast wheels. I had the weights from several wheels written down somewhere, not here. But IIRC, the PM's were about a pound heavier per wheel than the castalloys, which were about 1/2 lb heavier than the similar Marchesinis. PM=Performance Machine. The early ones were what they called "Chicane" style, I think. The later ones that had the swoopier spokes without the slot in the center were exclusively Buell, I think, as I never saw them in the PM catalogs. But the earlier ones were adopted by Buell but I don't think they were developed exclusively for Buell. | ||

Hey AL, thanks for the info. Do you remember the approximate weight of the wheels? I've never actually held a Buell wheel without the tire being on it. | ||

If you really want light wheels, fork up $2K for some Dymag carbon fibre wheels  . They weigh about 2 lbs each. | ||

I'm stunned that a new in-the-box front wheel just went for a little over $200 bucks on eBay. Too bad I couldn't justify another set! |
