I posted this question on another Buell board before I found this site, but got no responses, so I am hoping you guys can help:

I have been thinkin' seriously about getting back into drag racing. I have raced in one form or another almost every year of my life since age 16. A long time friend is offering up his 2000 S3T Buell 1200 for a price I simply cannot resist. What can you guys tell me about Buells??

I have ridden this bike many times and have always liked it, but I really know nothing about them. Any insight on these bikes is welcome if I'm gonna pull the trigger for a hobby that really won't start for me till next spring. Can they take an ass whoppin'? What times do they potentially run? (this bike is piped, chipped and has an intake) Are they easy to work on? Is a 2000 tube frame bike the right choice or are the 2003-up alloy chassis bikes an much better set-up? I know this is a Buell site so I am hoping to tap into a resource here.

Neil

Welcome Bikerlaw.
I have a 2002 M2 Cyclone tuber that I drag race up here in northern B.C. Canada. I havent done a 1/4 mile track yet but in the 1/8 mile track we have here, I ran a best of 7.775 @ 91+ MPH. These bikes wont keep up with the equivelent inline four Japanese models but you can get fairly consistent(so Im told) on them. When you arnt drag racing your S3, you can go canyon road carving with it, thats where it shines. The bastards are just sooooo much fun to ride...

I would think a tube framer is the way to go here. Better engine access, a longer wheelbase... and most importantly, a trapdoor transmission. It can be taken out trackside in less than 1/2 hour where on an XB, you have to split the cases for any transmission or shift fork problems.

When I was at an AHDRA meet, I couldn't count the Buell tubers I saw, but there wasn't one XB there the whole weekend.

Oh, and one of the most ardent bracket racers around here (Scott_in_ NH) rides an S3. He posts mid-11's with very few mods... pretty impressive.
