Just thought I would drop in, bust out some pics and ask a few hundred questions.
So here is the bike. It was pretty rough when i first got it a week ago but its getting better day by day.

Ok first questions... The rear shock, can you tell if thats the stock one or a recall replacement. My service manual shows a shock that does not have that chrome cover on it. So I guess i should ask, is that a cover or is that just the style that this shock is? Lastly anyone have a clue to how to set the preload on this shock. The service manual shows taking up those two long retaining bolts but I am not sure thats the right way with this shock as it looks nothing like the one in the book.

Congratulations! First input your VIN in the service section of h-d.com and check whether there is still an open recall. If you see a Shock Eye recall, then try and get the upgraded shock brand new and for free. Works great in Ohio. You do not have the latest version of shock mounted, and frankly, I would replace it either way. Hope this helps.

There were a couple of recalls on the shock/swingarm. That does not look to be the recalled shock but I could be wrong.

If you live anywhere close to Santa Fe HD/Buell talk to Murrae and he can run the VIN for you and can tell you what, if any, recalls have been done. He also knows a guy that is familiar on how to paint Buells.

You came to the right place and ask all the questions you want. The S1W is the ultimate badass bike...

Nice bike Friedrice although I am a little partial to the S1's
Preload adj. is done by loosening the lock nut on the shock and turning the inner nut for your desired effect.

Friedrice, here are a couple of pics of mine. Of course she was a basket case when I got her. There are still a couple of things I need to do but she is a lot of fun to ride.

BB, thanks, she is not done yet. I still have a few items to fix or add and I will take care of that this winter.

This is the bike I ride when I don't mind if people talk to me (I am somewhat anti-social around non-Buell people). Seems like everywhere I ride it people are wanting to talk to me about it.

It was, and is, a labor of love. It is my way to make amends for selling my 97 S1 (my first Buell).

F-Skinner - Already called him with the vin. He said all recalls have been done. You live in NM somewhere? I am in Los Alamos.

Here is a better shot of the shock. So you are saying loosen the smaller nut on the left then turn that big ass nut in to up the preload? Also which screw is compression and which one is rebound?

Glad all your recalls are done. No I do not live in NM. I live in Colorado. I am usually in NM for the Red River Rally and the Buell rally every year but this year I will miss the NM Buell rally in Taos (it is this weekend). There are a few great Buell guys and gals in NM. Go to the Storm Front section of the BadWeb and look for the NM thread.

Fried,
Adjust preload at your own risk ; )
The Showa shocks, I have learned the hard way, don't like having preload adjustments done. I've had two fail right after a preload adjustment and start puking oil.
Best bet might be to leave it be if it's close enough to ride and budget for a Works or Penske.
Just my .02
Congrats on the S1, btw.

No it's not close at all. With what I am assuming is the compresion screw turned in all the way and the rebound damn near turned in all the way the bike still pogo's like a fiend. Sag measured is right at one inch.

Nice bikes, all the black ones need is some of that white raised tank lettering to make them perfect! (I ran the same paint scheme with my black frame and a white front wheel for a while and really liked it).

That Euro seat has much cleaner lines than the stock one.

That shock is the pre-recall remote reservoir Showa isn't it? The new one has a much thicker back end, where the preload adjusts and mounting to the swingarm.

You have the damper adjustments labeled backwards. Rebound is on the reservoir.

Your shock is probably shot and it won't matter how you adjust it if it's pogoing badly now.

Yeah DJ, I noticed the oil residue at the front and rear of the canister, but didn't want to rain on his parade. New shocks are expensive, maybe proper adjustment might make it livable...
