how hard is it to replace? Do you need any special tools?

Not hard. Did mine two weeks ago so it's still fresh in my mind. I needed to get a 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 socket that I didn't have previously. I never mind an excuse to buy tools! You will need to find something to prevent the gears from turning while loosening/tightening those big nuts. There's some help here in the knowledge vault that I saved to a document that I'll send. Not mentioned is that the magnets will fight you in removing the drive assembly. Just enough to think you're forgetting to remove something. Mentioned, but not in an obvious way, is that you DON't need a clutch removal tool.

I think the clutch socket is 1 3/16 inches, but be sure to double check this.

Lots of information available via a search, read all you can find.

It is a somewhat simple job, but you should have a shop manual. Update the chain tensioner, if you haven't done this yet. I did mine about a week ago, no problems.

I double-checked. 1 3/16 it is. My apologies, and thanks to BikerJim for the correction. Hopefully no parts were purchased before the correction.

Clutch nut is left hand thread, engine sprocket nut is right hand thread, IIRC.

Be sure your torque wrench will work with left hand and right hand threaded fasteners.

"Be sure your torque wrench will work with left hand and right hand
threaded fasteners."

if not, the head can be disassembled, flip the drive head over, reassemble, and it works for lefties
