There are no oil puddles on the garage floor where I park my bike,"00" X1. Hasn't been any puddles in a long time come to think of it. I know there is oil in the well, why ain't it leakin out? It is susposed to aint it, its designed that way, no? Is it about to blow up? Should I tare it apart any way,  jest in case? | ||

So, it has oil in the tank when running, but after it sits, the tank is dry? If so, and there's no puddle underneath, then it's simply wet-sumping. No Big Deal. Just check oil with the bike running before adding... | ||

This situation did not seem to be a problem when BUELLs had aluminum oil tanks and the BUELLers were old sportster riders ... BOTTOM LINE: If there not enough oil in the oil tank the engine will run hotter because the oil not only lubricates, but also cools the engine ... Too much oil in the oil tank you get air bubbles in the oil(not good), the engine will puke the excess out the head breathers(very messy) and the base gaskets will start to weep(very slight oil film which makes for a dirty engine) ... When BUELLs went to the plastic oil tanks this became a problem because of new riders buying BUELLs and there were less and less mechanics in HARLEY-DAVIDSON Dealers that had a SIGN indicating they sold BUELLs ... Another big problem was the Hand Books and Factory Service Manuals were a bit off in the way they stated how to check engine oil ... The correct way to check your engine oil is with the engine at operation tempeature(ie: after a good hard ride) ... The oil level needs to be one inch from the top of the dip stick which gives you the correct air space ... This one inch is measured when you first remove the dip stick ... Everybody has been taught to remove the dip stick, swipe it off and re-insert, remove again to check the oil ... If you do this you will find that the oil level is a lot lower than when you first pulled the dip stick out ... Now this is similar to checking the engine oil in your car, as the proper way is to get your car to operating temperature(ie: after a good ride), with the car on level ground turn the engine off, wait 5 minutes, pull the dip stick out, wipe off, reinsert and remove to check ... The oil should be at the full mark on the dip stick, if not , top off till it is ... (Message edited by buellistic on July 22, 2008) | ||

on the side stand on level ground, engine running ... Would it have really been that hard to mark the dipstick in such a way that I wouldn't have to go dig up a 2x4 and pray the bike didn't tip over each time I check the oil? Sorry.... just venting. The fact that I apparently have a blown seal from overfilling is adding to the aggravation right now. | ||

Danny - Mine leaks, but only a bit of goo out the breather tube when it's been run hard... maybe you just need to loosen up the reins and bit and let her stretch her legs? Seriously, you guys need to lighten up. Oh, sorry 'bout your blown seal though, that really is too bad. -Mike | ||

ran my s1 for about 2000 miles with a leaking engine main seal until i had a good window for fixing. i waited til after March Badness this year. drained the excess out of the primary about every 500 or when it started puking out the xmsn vent. no long term effects. tim | ||

This sounds like crazy-man advice, but I came to this very same conclusion totally independently of Buellistic and I'm not crazy. I can only speak for myself, of course. | ||

I think Danny was just bragging that his Buell has oil in it but isn't leaking so therefore something must be wrong! knock on wood, but my "Harley" (as my brother calls it) shares garage space with his Suzuki dragbike and Ducati and it is the only one not currently marking its territory! Danny if you are bored you could always try cleaning it or polishing something! | ||

i guess ive been checking mine wrong all these years.. i have always checked mine after a ride, holding it upright, level and the engine off.. | ||

WAIT A MINUTE! i just dug out my 99 owners manual and it says to check the oil level just like i discribed... ride the bike until hot, turn ignition to lock position and hold the bike upright, while you remove the dipstick..where do you get the check while the engine is running stuff? it says the same thing in my 2001 manual too.. | ||

And after three craches it still won't leak whats wrong? Think thats why it keeps crashing cause it don't leak? Some thing must need fixin? What should I polish, all the nicks scratches dings and dents from the pavement surfing? LOL | ||
