I'm looking for a bike to ride to work... ok and cruze a little! My friend has a 2000 Cyclone with 4800 miles, he ended up with it from a death in the family and has been basically sitting in a garage for a couple years...is $2,500 a decent deal? He said it needs a bath, and the chrome could use a little TLC but it runs fine?

There are a few simple upgrades that need to be done to a 2000 model (and it's a sure thing the shock will fail if it hasn't done so already),but we can coach you through them.

Get a service manual, too.

Holy smokes! Jump on that deal ASAP! Fantastic bike.

Budget about $300-$400 bucks and a couple weekends to make it just about perfect. These are easy "preventative" fixes that avoid a lot of pain down the road. You may find some of this was already done.

1) Replace the front exhaust mount with the new part (a beefy cast upside down Y thingy). That'll keep you from breaking studs, which will keep you from breaking easy outs in studs : )

2) Adjust the belt to scary loose. To do it right, disconnect the shock and support the bike and move the swingarm through the whole range of motion, adjust the axle spacers, and mark that spot for future reference. The easier (and probably good enough) way is to just adjust it such that when you sit on the bike, you can lift the bottom of the belt so it *just* starts to get tension when it touches the bottom of the swingarm.

3) Replace your primary chain tensioner with the updated part (beefy backplate). While you are there, replace the paper primary gasket with the new metal gasket.

4) Replace both rocker box gaskets with the updated metal gaskets.

5) Drill out the fuel air mixture screw on the carb and adjust it to 2.5 turns out (I think, search the archives). You might as well swap the low speed jet while you are that far in, I think it goes to a 45, but again check the archives.

6) The forcewinder intakes look great and sound great. I ran a catch can on mine, but it was always drooling everywhere. Were I do to it again for a daily commuter, I would just vent into the intake and live with the carbon build up and loss of power. Not necessary though, the stock airbox works great, it's just a little on the "big" side.

7) The supertrap IDS exhaust is nice and not that loud. Probably getting expensive and hard to find though... stock works fine as well.

Go though this list, and you would have a heck of a nice bike even at $4k. Under $3k is a *smoking* good deal.

Oh, and at 10k miles (which you will hit before this riding season is out if you are smart) drop the oil pump at the next oil change, and peek up into the cam chest and look at the oil pump drive gear (rotate the engine to look at both sides). It's probably fine, if not then you will want to swap that out for the new part as well.

Shane, you are one of the many who has discovered the reason some of us prefer the old school machines. The XB12 line is great when all is well, but when faced with that stupid look on the face of the HD certified technitian, we realize it's time to get one we can diagnose and work on ourselves(with the help of some Bad-friends).

Reep-How do you do #6? I have mine vented but not to the intake and on long rides it makes a mess specially if I have saddle bags on. Thanks Michael (sorry did not mean to hi-jack the thread) Oh-yeah that sounds like a smoking deal for the M2!!

For #6 I've actually considered putting the breadbox back onto the M2 and building a catchcan and viewtube into it mounted inside the breadbox somehow.

An alternative is to do the XB rocker box swap onto the M2, supposed to pretty much eliminate any vented spooge.

The "chrome" comment is curious though, trying to think of what chrome there is on an M2.

A properly vented catch-can is pretty easy to fabricate with little or no money. It took me 2 1/2 tries to get it right, but I got it right.

Lots of good threads on budget catch-cans out there.

I'd do #3 first if you can't find any service records that show it already being done.

I think some of the forcewinders (maybe the ones listed as for the X1?) had nipples already installed that you can run the breather hoses right into. If not, you could probably route a hose into a nipple mounted inside the K&N cone and epoxied / rtv'd / bolted in place on the bottom. Or just drill a hole in the forcewinder and put a nipple there (an expensive experiment, but it would probably work fine).

I never tried "real" catch cans, but I spent two years fussing with vents and various T line setups (where a long section of hose was a catch can, complete with valve on the bottom). It always sort of worked, for a while, until I got goed somehow, or my garage floor got gooed somehow, or it left a little puddle at work.

It can be made to work, I just don't know if I would go through the fuss again for a performance benefit I can't feel. It is a fun and simple little project though, so if it would be a fun hobby for you, its a neat little fabrication excercise.

I guess the shock and some torx heads have some chrome. And a dash bezel or something : ). Maybe he just meant the headers are ugly looking, thats an easy fix.

Here's a link to my budget catch-can. Not hard to fabricate and there are hundreds of good ways to do them. Don't bother running hoses straight to big fuel filters or or vented T-junctions, they just won't work as well a properly vented catch-can with an oil separator inside it.

Brilliant!

I'm sure I would have thought of that myself... eventually.

I did the swap and really didn't notice a huge difference... perhaps a little less spooge, but just as much water. But the routing to the catch-can was lot more efficient and it really cleaned up the right side of the bike... it was a worthwhile upgrade. It also eliminated the umbrella valves and did away with a gasket and spacer on each cylinderhead.

Shane, did you get the bike?
When I bought my '00 Cyclone it needed a bath, too. I purchased the service manual, did the updates (except I have stock exhaust and XB rocker box covers) and added a little farkle. Besides the updates, I've been able to do almost all of the work myself since so much great info is available here on BadWeb. Keep in mind these are a 'hands on' kind of bike, and will need some looking after to maintain top riding shape. If you're not into that then ownership may be a frustrating experience. But, if you like/don't mind that kind of thing then it just adds to the adventure(s).

It's a fun bike to ride, and it's great for riding around in the mountains!

Wow, sounds like I will have a lot of work to do...maybe I should just get a honda or something...LOL...JUST KIDDING! Actually, I'm waiting to hear back from the seller. I found out the bike has a supertrap pipe on it, not sure what else has been done to it.
