I'm leaving in 7 days for a 3,000+ mile trip, and just discovered my front Isolator is trashed (again).

That makes 4 now. The Blast has gone though 2, and the S3 has gone though 2 and that's in about 10,000 miles for each... Do I really have to replace the isolator every 5,000 mi as a regular maintence issue?? DAMNIT!!!

According to my parts book, 16207-79B is the part i need. But, dealer says it was superceded to 16207-79D.

I read somewhere that the prior superceded part 16207-79C was no good for the buell tube frames -

DOES ANYONE know for SURE that the 79D part will fit?!

HELP

OK, So there was a BPAB#32 talking about L0501.2 as the new part.... Dealer doesn't have it in stock, and for all I know that has been superceded too??

.....

It has not superceded. The -79D won't work for Buell, so the previous part (-79C) changes to Buell numbers as it's now a Buell-only part.

You can also get an equivalent replacement from JP Cycles for half the price of the factory part:

http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=957E BCC3-54E9-4031-8943-BB1946225417

I put one on my S3 about 2 years ago and it works fine.

Do a search on the KV for a detailed explanation for the front isolator. Mine lasts ~ 25,000 miles; not sure why yours is failing so quickly...

You can not get the correct part from HD, you need to either get the Buell PN or -79"C" via JP or Dennis Kirk. The -79D will NOT work.

The reason the -79D isolator won't work is that the center hole is too small for the 1/2" x 3.75" bolt which holds the engine up to pass thru. The -79C and earlier, have a clearance hole for this 1/2" bolt.

Not sure that information is correct. Infact, the -79C part may also have the smaller hole.

Neither is uniquely correct as to why the '79D won't work. It's the massive metal washer built in on top. I was wrong about the number though, as they've updated to the D and the last I've seen was the C. '79B is what you need. I think the smaller hole came about on "79D".

Remember, the Buell has the massive D-shaped washer, the "D" of which is made to clear the frame. The built in washer won't accomplish this (At least it didn't when I tried to install one)

The two latest revisions are noticably firmer than their predecessors as well. We got alot of complaints from the FLT crowd when they arrived.

At this point I don't care anymore about "C", "D" or "B". I couldn't find a dealer within 200 miles that had what I need in stock, so my entire trip that I've been planning for a whole year might go out the window if the parts I had to ORDER don't show up in time to install them. I asked the dealer to overnight them (American Sport Bike didn't answer their phone saturday). But, who knows. I give it 50/50 that the part shows up - and is actually the right part.

And, because this part has failed twice now over a very short period of time, even if I get it replaced, I don't really trust it to last the whole trip (I actaully ordered 2 isolators so I can bring one with me!), not to mention having to worry about the front head bolts and the hanger arm snapping in half from the stress that occured with the bad isolator - I don't know how long I've been riding around with a failed isolator - maybe 2 weeks? Longer?? I don't know?! That, or I suppose the oilpump gear will explode, or maybe a rear wheel bearing will go, or maybe the stator nut will back off and fubar the crankshaft....

I know one thing, this is the last time I'm going to order parts for this bike... This time next year I'll probably be on either a new Concours or an FJR. That is, if I don't buy one or the other this week....

What Tube Frame BUELLers need is an OLD H-D Parts Man(not a parts person technician) that knows what retro fits off SPORTSTER Platforms and BIG TWIN Platforms ...

ie: -79? front isolator ...

Every HARLEY-DAVIDSON dealer will have at least one ...

Never say BUELL as they go brain dead an say it will not fit ...

Just ask for the PART NUMBER only never saying BUELL(even at a Dealer that has BUELL Sign on the building some where) ...

If you ride your BUELL as hard as we all do the BIG TWIN -79(?) front isolator is better ...

Some times in the BLAST it lasts longer, in fact there is an after market front isolator bracket made for the BIG INCH TWINS are being put on the BLAST front isolator if you really ride them hard ...

If I can find an 08 FJR within 200mi of my house that I can get my hands on by Wednesday, I'll buy it and worry about my isolator when I get back.

Leaving for a 3,000 mile trip with a known bad engine mount - which could lead to a total failure of the head mount bracket or sheering of the head bolts is the dumbest advice I have ever heard.

I rode ~250 miles 2-up with a toasted front isolator. Just about jarred my fillings out by the time we got home. I would NOT advise leaving home with a suspect unit. I'll bet you can get one overnighted from JP Cycles easy enough.

My local H/D shop sold me the one with the hole slightly too small. I had already installed and started to run the bolt through when I figured it out. Saturday eve and I was to ride Sunday morning with the gang so I simply ran the right size drill for the bolt and its been working great going on 2 1/2 years now.

In other words, if they only have the smaller hole (79D?) in stock and you want to ride the Buell then you could try drilling it.

The old part # will automatically sub to the latest # / version . This will have a 7/16" hole , drill it to 1/2" as mentioned.

Drill the rubber isolator? Glad it worked for you guys... That is not something I would like to do.

I tried to call AL on Saturday, but no answer - so I ended up ordering from my local dealer who assured me he could get me what I need by Wednesday from a dealer a couple hundred miles away who supposedly has the isolator in stock...

The -79D is the better isolator and improving/product improving the part does not hurt the integrity of the rubber of the part ...

As long as when you drill out the hole going slow to keep the heat down ...

I shouldn't have to modify factory parts. That's just bullshit as far as I'm concerned.

Al, I really appreciate the offer. Since I already ordered (2 actually) from the dealer and they should be on the way, I'm going to hold out. If the dealer's parts get delayed, or are just wrong - I'll let you know, and worse case senario, drive up there and get it from you... Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the offer.

I might call my local hack shop and see if they have one tomorrow. Ill report back if i do and we can bash these chumps together. There are some things that should be mandatory to be ready available for downed bikes. Thats the lackluster bullshit at Harley not caring about the dealers and us if you ask me. There used to be some strict rules about this shit and alot more giving a damn!!

Something is wrong if they're only lasting 5000 miles. Mine lasted about 25,000 miles on average.

Of course, you might have just got a bad batch.
Check the old dead one for "barry" being cast into the rubber.
They are supposed to be made by Barry controls.
I heard that some of the aftermarket ones are too stiff and allow vibes through.

The first one was replaced last spring ~ 10K mi. and merely had a small tear - it was not totally failed, but I was trying to be on top of things

Now @ 15K mi the 2nd one is totally failed, -- as in the engine hangs 1/2 inch lower than normal and the isolator is completely seperated around the middle.

Several people have suggested the "bad batch" issue and that's what I'll assume the problem is. The bike has never been crashed as far as I know, the Heim joints all look good and have never been loosened or otherwise tampered with. Rear isolators look good too. In the last 5K mi, I have never wheelied the bike either - other than just getting the front light in 2nd gear a few times. Mostly, I ride very conservatively.

Also, the Dealer called today (Tuesday) wondering if I still wanted them to order the isolator because its backordered from Harley.

I nearly swallowed the phone.

They are now going to order teh part from another dealer and overnight it, so I should have it tomorrow afternoon.

No guaranty it won't be from the same "bad batch" again though... I asked for 2 of them, but they are only able to get me one (apparently). I'll be stopping at every dealership I see on the way to see if they have another one.

I also found 2 08 FJRs, but both are over 3 hours away. I don't have time at work this week to take another day off before my 2wk. trip to make all the arrangements, pickup the new bike, install my GPS/Starcom etc, and get the 1st service out of the way before Saturday.

So, the trip will go one with the Buell. If it survives, it will be for sale when/if I make it back.

I really don't understand why your having such problems. I got my parts within two days and replaced the part the same night!

Check any of the advertised Buell dealers and they'll get the correct part for you.

Are you working through a Buell dealer or a Harley dealer? Sounds to me like your dealer is not a registered Buell dealer... and hence the root cause of the problem?
