I wanted to poll all users for info regarding the "time" to rebuild the 1203 engine. I appreciate all replies. Thanks.

I'd be interested in that too. I got 50k on my hard worked engine and everything is fine, runs good, doesn't eat too much oil (still the same consumption as new in that regard)... but I wonder how long I can expect us to be happy together.

I am in the process of rebuilding my 2001 Cyclone with 36K showing on the speedo. It was not needed, as she ran fine. But, I felt she was getting a little tired and could use some pepping up! Besides, its fun!

I had to rebuild my 2004 XB12R with just under 10K. I had no choice in this matter. The crank bearings went kaboom in the flywheel. That was a PITA, very $$$ and time consuming.

By rebuild you mean...?

I've got just under 24K on a '99 X1 and I'll have to tear into it this winter to replace the base gaskets that have started to leak. Well, the rear one is leaking so I figured I'd go ahead and do both.

Mine is at 83,000 and it's leaking out of the front base gasket.
I figure when it starts to leak from another gasket, I will start thinking about a top end for it.
It's still not burning any more oil than it ever did.
It still pulls like a train too!

The time to rebuild is when your leakdown test shows you have leaking rings or valves...

What PSI do you use? On my plane I use 80 PSI on a differential tester. Anything above 70/80 is excellent. But they'll pass with 50/80.

i had to rebuild mine at 5,000

it was burning a lot of oil and it was because there were groves in the cylinder walls of my motor...who knows just bad luck

I've got 40K on my 01 X1. It leaks a bit here and there but is fundamentally sound and still goes pretty good.

Top speed seems to be down a bit (125ish seems to be the max now was in the 130s when new), other than that it still gets high 40s/low50s mpg and the compression is good (haven't done a leakdown yet).

I often think about a 1250 kit and stage one heads, just cuz it'd be fun to do (well in the winter anyways) and I'd love to ride a "fresh" motor again. I've done top ends on IL4s, but never on a 'merican V twin

On the other hand, maybe I'll leave it alone and try to catch up to Lafayette : )

Closing on 50k. Rear base gasket is leaking but still runs great. I think I'm gonna roll it untill the jugs fall off!

At 50k, I can still bounce off the rev limiter tapped out in 5th on my M2.

I did mine at about 50ish.....

Only reason, base gaskets, and a h/g leaking(owner induced, not part failure)....

There was some scoring of the cylinders... again, my fault....

That is really the time to it, unless you want to start risking things a bit longer.

Buellistic said Eric said 200k ? Wow Im sure Harley told us in 93 that the evo was a 100k mile motor before rebuild. I would really love to see and geek out on the r and d work that points to 200k miles : ) That would make my millinium.

I wouldn't be surprised if the bottom end of the engine would go 200k miles. With roller bearings everywhere, there's not much to wear out.

At about 50k my M2 is using too much oil, so I suspect a rebuild is in the offing. Looking at how wide a variances HD allows for new motor parts, I suspect engine life is really a crapshoot- you may get an engine with well matched parts or you may get one with the equivelent of a half worn out engine.

There is no reason a motor should leak these days. Even harley has their own Yamabond now. My engine rebuilds do not leak!

Top end at about 30K Seriously hard track days and lots of "practice" miles on the street. It really didn't need it but I did it when I was in there.

Mine don't leak. Just new generation HD gaskets and no Yama/HD bond.

Check that starter gasket before you pull it down to the base gaskets. I pulled mine down to the base gaskets twice trying to fix a leak. Replaced the starter gasket and BAM no more leak

S1W... 40,000 Miles... Runs STRONG!! Minor seep somewhere near the front of the cases, below the oil filter. Not enough to drip on the ground. When the seep becomes an obvious leak and she begins to mark her spot, I'll look at a tear down.

Nothing fancy, just gaskets and any worn out parts.

"Check that starter gasket before you pull it down to the base gaskets. I pulled mine down to the base gaskets twice trying to fix a leak. Replaced the starter gasket and BAM no more leak"

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic but I have a leak which I am trying to isolate. Appears to be from the starter gasket since I see oil weeping on top of the primary where it meets the starter with some collecting in the cavity on top of the starter and eventually dripping next to the drain plug. What does the "Base Gasket" leak look like? What is involved in replacing the starter gasket?
Thanks and sorry if I hi-jacked the thread.

I have a friend with 220 k miles, no rebuild on his 1993 sportster. I wasn't so lucky. Just got my new flywheels in for my 2000 X1. It had only 16500 miles when the rod bearings grenaded.
