I am the guy that lost my luggage on I94 about 2 miles west of the Host Hotel during homecoming. I think I figured out a system to stop the luggage from falling out if the S2T bag opens but I need to replace the weather stripping around both bags. When I got the other bag opened (the one that did not open on the interstate) I damaged some of the weather stripping going around the bag (I lost my key on the interstate as well). Does anyone know of a replace part number other than the Buell part number?? Or does anyone have some of the original Buell supplied weather stripping they do not need? Seems that Buell changed that part and the new stuff is a bitch to fit to the bags and I don't like it anyway. I have been searching the Internet for old auto weather stripping with no luck. I checked Autozone, Lowes, Checker Auto and some local parts places with no results. I will try to fit the new stuff one more time but really liked the old weather stripping. Thanks, Frank | ||

Ok, the goal here is not to loose my luggage again and not to fix the lock issue. I went to lowes and picked up some little hooks, small bungees and a couple of screws and here is what I came up with.    Total time to complete was one beer....or 15 minutes with drilling and all. I still need to replace that weather stripping then I will get them painted to match the bike. I did find why the lock came loose and it was my fault. The nut holding the locking bracket backed out enough so the nut riding the bike lost his luggage. Frank | ||

I cut up some mc inner tube-read made big thick rubber bands- and made some hooks out of coat hanger wire to hold my saddle bag zues (sorry for that bad spelling)fittings-under tension- and in place. to keep my lids from opening all the way I employed the H-D FXRT's plastic 'slotted tongue and hook' arrangement to keep their bags from opening up completely.If you rode away and they were left un-locked, the allowed the bags to only open about an ich or two. I fitted that tongue and hook set up to both of my S-T's bags- small lids and deep lids. to keep from loosing - a regular occurence when I first owned the bike- the hard bags contents. The mini bunge idea to hold the soft bag in place IS a great idea, which I'd thought of it. The FXRT bag tongue and hook set up seems to work pretty good, but it is NOT infallible. the early Buell bags have plenty of flex in them., | ||

I'm trying something on my bike, but haven't had the time to mess with it. When the locks are locked, the hooks point towards the center of the bag which makes it easier for the lid to flex, and one of the latches to un-latch. I want to rotate them so they point away from the center when they're locked, which I suspect would keep them from popping. I had my first ever latch-pop on the way to Road America at Homecoming. I can't imagine why...not like they have lots of expansion joints in the highways up in WI, lol.... | ||

Rat, I thought about that today but I did not want to mess around with the locks anymore today. I needed to rebuild the carb which I did, and also velcroed my seat to the seat pan. I also added a little hook were the seat lock used to be to give me another place to put a bungee cord if needed. Good thing I took the day off LOL. Road Oiler I got that idea from looking at the S3T bags so I guess Buell would have to take credit for that idea. My search for a suitable replacement for the weather stripping continues. I checked a couple of more auto parts places and one guy told me maybe classic auto suppliers may have weather stripping like what came on the bags from the factory. I put the narrow bags back on today as I really like the look of them and only use the big bags for travel..... A work in progress for sure. | ||

Dave, I am glad you found the site. It was great talking to you. I must say your bike is one of the best examples of a 96 S2T I have ever seen. The fastest color too!! LOL. I really screwed up the weatherstripping when I had to break into one of the bags because I lost my key (different key for the bags). I am in no hurry as I have several other projects going on. I came home to see my S1W leaking tranny fluid so it got my attention last night and I have many things to do to the S2T yet. BTW: I figured out that belt pully guard rubbing issue. It was so simple, I over looked the rubber mounting bolt location. After seeing yours I knew mine was wrong. I will try to get to a couple of auto parts stores this weekend to see what I can find as a replacement to the weatherstripping but if you see anything suitable let me know. Frank | ||

Frank - you keep saying "weatherstripping"...do you mean the stuff that looks like door edge guard c-channel? LOL. I can practically put a screwdriver in and out of my bags without opening them they're so NOT sealed.... | ||

Yep thats the stuff Joe.... It actually did seal my bag against the elements but when I used a knife to jimmy them open I screwed it up. I am going to repaint those bags to match the bike and just wanted it to look good and perform well. I think I had the lock alignment pretty good because the reason they came open was the nut holding the locking plate came loose. The great WI roads just helped it along. I did not have time to mess with them last night. I had to replace a primary gasket on the S1W...... Buell; Turning riders into mechanics for 25 years! Of course if I did not love working on my bikes I would have something else.... Frank | ||

Joe, Weren't we just discussing this subject in the Sheraton parking lot? I seem to remember you "knocking wood" when you said yours had never popped!  Hope you didn't lose anything to the highway. We made it back to Austin (3027 total miles) and mine still haven't failed, even with me overloading them like I did. Maybe the pressure of all that stuff I had crammed inside pressing against the door caused so much friction that they couldn't! I know it was sure hard to turn the key... Jay - it only popped enough for me to look at it, say a few choice things (imagining it popping all the way), opening it up and bending the hook into a more hook-like shape with my Gerber before we hit the parade lap. That's all I'd need, someone getting covered in a rain-suit-chute when it popped open on the track, spilling the suits.... Great to meet you too. Tony Ritrivi took a great pic of your, my, and Frank's S2s one night on a slow exposure with no flash. I'm waiting to get a copy from him and I'll be sure to forward one to you. Frank - I don't know about "all over", it's just 2 pics of us and one of the bike staging for the parade rac....er, lap. But it is nice to see - the shutterbugs must like redheads, because I'm certainly not much to look at. She's making a scrapbook of the trip to include the autographed book, the goofy temp tattoo and a sticker, one of the little pyramid table thingys, a patch, and the photos that she's going to email to walmart and have put on photo paper along with some of the ones we took. I'm thrilled she's so psyched about the whole thing - she's talking about "when" we go next year, not "if". YAY. And I got Tony's pic, he sent me the link to his page, and if you need it I can send it to you. That one's getting printed out too You're right. Next year, we have to make a point of gathering all the S2's in one place for a pic. | ||

Thats great that Kim is into going next year. Will Kim be on her own bike? Lynn and I talked about next year a little. Lynn and I do a few biker type events every year and I have to say I think we had the most fun at this one. Not because of the events, which were great, but because of the people like you and Kim. I usually go to Sturgis for a couple of days each year but I had to canx my vacation due to some contract issues so our next ride will be with the NM group during their rally around the Taos area. I went back to work on Wed and it was a long week. I was doing 11 to 12 hours days just to get caught up but would have had shorter days if I stayed off the BadWeb lol.... I need to retire again! | ||

Well I found weather stripping for the hard bags. It is from JC Whitney (part number 890791) and is standard trim 7/16" high and cost about 25 dollars shipped. I have not put it on the bags yet but it looks like it will work fine and keep the rain out. A couple of not so great photos.   Another pic of the 1995 S2 just for fun  |
