I bought my 2000 X1 a couple of years ago with an oil leak. We suspected the cases were seeping but the price was right and it only leaked if parked several days with out riding, so I bought it. I've lived with it for 2 years but it's getting a little worse. It used to leave a half dollar sized spot after sitting for 3-4 days and now it leaves the same size spot after about 1-2 days. I am assuming the only fix is to split the cases and reseal them, right? If it holds up, I'm planning on having it fixed this winter. Here's where the advice part comes in. Since the engine is going to be torn apart, wouldn't this be a great time for upgrades? What would be the best bang for the buck? I'm not sure I want to spend the money for the 1250 kit but I was thinking XB or XL1200R heads with XB9 pistons. I know several people have this set up already but I haven't heard anyone talk about one on an injected bike, and how pump gas friendly are they? I've already got the race ECM and Force exhaust but it is otherwise stock. Let me know what you think.

Cams, lifters, roller rockers, forged pistons, are all easy bolt on stuff you can do at home. Boring cylinders and flowing heads are an option also. All depends what you are looking for and want to accomplish! I'm tearing down my M2 next week to do some of the above mentioned.

Before you go into that case. Make sure that your exhaust is not loading the case. If it is exerting forces to push the cases apart it will leak. Loosen all the hangers on the exhaust and the header bolts so the exhaust is free to move. If any part of the exhaust pulls in during tightening that is more than likely the cause of the leak.

Joe, thanks for the idea. I'll check that to make sure but it was leaking before I changed the exhaust. When I first bought it, you could see part of the silicone hanging down where it had somehow come out. The bike had pretty low miles on it when I bought it so I figure it sat for a long time with out being started. I've searched the site and this seems to be a rare problem. It sucks to have to tear down and basically rebuild a perfectly running engine.

Anyways, here is my plan as of right now. XB9 pistons, XB12 heads, and stock cams. Is there a bolt in cam that will be noticeably better? Will I have to use different pushrods. I've heard the XB9 pistons bump the CR to 11.5:1. Will I need compression releases in the heads? Will a race ECM handle that much compression on pump gas?

Check out Norton's line of cams in your Bikers Choice catalog, the 555s I put in my X1 ROCK! But check to make sure they are compatible.

I'm not sure about the XB swap over. As I have never done it and am not familiar with doing the conversion. But, there are two sets of bolt in cams available from Screamin Eagle that will pop right in with the stock set up.

ok, first of all, you have an x1, therefore you already have the "bolt in cams" but if your going with xb/1200r heads you can go with the se536 cams with the stock valve springs as they are designed to handle the higher lift... second, your splitting the cases....... if there ever was a time, now is it to go with a big bore kit..... and i'm not talking 1250, i'm talkin 88-90" that bang for dollar since you already are splitting cases is far and above the other stuff.... dont get me wrong, heads, cams, etc are all good stuff, but my point is that since your there......... NOW IS THE TIME.

One little negative thing with overboring the cases is that there will be less surface area for the base gaskets.

but then again, you would be driving the tractor from hell!

I would love to do the 88-90". I don't think my budget will allow that AND heads/cams. How would a 90" run with all the stock parts (heads,cams, EFI w/race ECM)?
