Guys I promise this is the last and then I'm ordering parts till I find the problem. I read here in the KV that the same Relay is used for the Starter and ignition on some Buell models. Is this true for the 2002 M2? Assuming they are and that they are good (mechanic insists they are and my problem is the Ignition Module) then reason would dictate that if I switched them I would experience the same symptoms, correct? This is not the case. In one position I get nothing when I hit the starter button not even the "click", when I switch them the starter motor rolls the engine over but with no spark to the plugs. Before I cough up the cash on a Ignition module I cant send back I think Id like to replace these relays to be sure. The manual says they are automotive type relays can I pick them up at a Automotive parts store? nearest HD dealer is 3 hrs away. lastly anyone with a carbed Buell have a Ignition relay go bad? What were the symptoms? Im assuming if the starter relay went the starter would not receive any power and I would get noting when hitting the starter button. Any thoughts?

i Just replaced mine this past weekend, 97 S1, but it ended up being the ring connector for the ignition circuit comming off of the starter had broken off, I think that you should definitly replace the relays first since they were only 15 bucks for both from harley, and they were the same part

Problem Solved!! : it was the starter relay! Once I found out the relays were the same (they look different on the outside) it became a process of elimination. One would make the starter kick over one would not so I assumed that was the good one and left it in the Starter Relay position. I removed the other and wired pin 30 to 87 in the ignition relay part of the block and the bike now runs. I'm not sure why grounding pin 85 as Bad_kama suggested in another post had no effect but I found another post in the KV that suggested connecting 30 to 87. I'm still not totally clear on what the relays do but I'm learning fast. Thanks all for the advise, one thing is for sure that Harley Mechanic who said the relays were fine and to replace the Ignition Module will not be seeing my bike again and the $$ I didn't spend on the Module will be going toward tracking down that Service Manual. Just an FYI I read in the KV that if the Starter Relay "Clicks" its probably NOT the problem but mine was "clicking" none the less. Now does anyone know what that relay might cross to so I can get one at the local auto parts store?

Hey congratulations Psycrew! Don't ya just love that feeling of conquest!! I think that is one reason we are all here on this site - I know I'm hooked on wrenching myself after getting some dumb advice from a local HD trained mechanic. He might know HD but he don't know Buell and I, like you, am learning.

So does anyone know if those relays cross to an automotive application. Will any relay work if the pins line up and its rated for 12 VDC and no more than 30 Amps?

Jeff
Placing a ground at 85 simply bypassed the safety circuit switches. Now that we know the problem was the relay not one of the safety switches. Good job.

Thanks again to everyone who chimed in with advise that and KV helped me solve this one myself. Not finding a cross for the relay at the Auto parts store I called both Dealers in my Provence and guess what, they had no stock but I found a OEM replacement made by/for Drag Specialties at Dennis Kirk I ordered 3 to have some spare. Since I had to spend $100 to get free shipping I rounded the order up with a Forcewinder Intake! The Breadbox is finally gone. Still looking for a Manual (gonna order one from a Dealer in the US) because I'm doing my own Wrenching from now on.
