Okay, 2002 X1 with V+H pipe and forcewinder intake. Not sure about motor work, kid has been lied to so much we cant be sure. It runs okay but, it needs in my opinion the race ecm or dyno to make up for its holes in the powerband. And they are glaringly big holes. Ugh, the bike is hard to ride. Which would you chose and why? I have the dynojet already. Is the race ecm better? Chase, if you are out there, please jump in. Thanks all......Mattu

EcmSpy will fix most everything.
I have a Dobeck Dynojet Tecscrewsion,used 1 day $100.00 plus shipping.
Adds fuel only, but won't fix dead spot.

The race ecm along with a tps reset is all you need. It will smooth everything out from top to bottom and will run great. Frank.

I wouldn't recommend any aftermarket DFI, TFI, Dyno or Power Commander products. They will do bad things to your Buell, or Harley Davidson motorcycle. Trust me. I'd go with the Race ECM.

I agree that the DFI, TFI, Dyno, PC, etc are all trash, but the race ECM is not a do-all fix all.

IF (please see the big "IF" over there to the left) it has had motor work, cams, heads, etc, it will need tuning via ECMspy or similar before it will run right and be safe (As in, not blowing up from lean spots and detonation). If it's just a pipe and intake (Most likely), then the race ECM should work well.

Get the Race ECM.

Ride it, keep an eye on the plugs, make sure it isnt running lean.

If you get any detonation, go to a cooler plug.. NGK DPR 9EA9 should be sufficient(plug I would run regardless, currently, I am running a colder plug)).

If its not running lean, I wouldnt worry any more about it. The Race ECM does plug alot of the splotchy holes in the regular ECM... the on/off lag feeling around 2000-3300 in particular.

You can also toss it on a Dyno, and make sure you get the A/F ratio on the sheet, and go from there....and even tune..

Any holes can be patched with ECM spy as well.

Thats where I would start. The Race ECM isnt the end all be all... BUT, its a helluva start, and 99% of the time, its sufficient.

The PC for the Buell.... is useless... all I will say...

I doubt a builder would do alot of "work" to a bike, then run a stock pipe, and not some sort of tuning.... so... my 2 cents..

Wiley I second most of what is said here the bike will run much better with a race ECM, I say this from experience.

Thank you one and all for the input. Kid I met has been lied cheated and bullshitted so much. I'm trying to do the right thing and guide him along the path to Tuber righteousness. I got his brakes squared away after the dealer took him for a wad and said all Buell brakes are mushy. Uhh yeah. New rotors and a rebuild after a thorough cleaning got it. They simply (IMO) added fluid and bled them. Changed his motor oil and said, all bikes leak. Uhh yeah. No seal on oil plug. Exhaust leaking like a sieve. Yeah, they all sound like that. Uhh yeah. Needless to say its his first ride, he made a good choice. 02 X1. Doin my best to get him straightened out. We appreciate your help.

The Race ECM and Race Header is the right combination to get. The Race ECM does a good job of having a smoother torque curve, but the Header is what really made the "torque dip" disappear.

I'd highly recommend the race header -- appreciable difference.

When I bought my X1 from the pirate who told me it was choice, I sent it right away to a trusted Harley guy...found a broken ring and two flat cams, replaced rings and Norton 555 cams. It ran ok for a lean condition but then when I replaced the ECM with the race version,OMG new bike! That and VDSTS is the ticket. But then I started pulling teeth off the belt! Well you can't win 'em all.

Or poor belt maintenance.

My thoughts exactly.

I have seen these things hold up to built motors, nitrous, and stickies at the strip..

I refer to my opening line"When I bought my X1 from the pirate who said it was choice". As I have been known to bitch about elsewhere, the seller of a machine is NOT always forthright in there claims of condition of the piece they are selling(as in Grovskopas case). I can be fairly confident that the belt which gave up seventeen teeth upon a wheelie attempt at about 70mph, was in fact NOT well maintained (good observation Jos)! Said belt was quickly replaced with a fresh one from my friend Al @ American Sport Bike and has not given up any more teeth. But the point which I was making is that the race ECM is the way to go in All cases even if more adjustments must be made later with VDSTS or other programs.

I have an '01 S3T with V&H SSR pipe, forcewinder, and the race ECM. Go with the Buell race ECM. My fuelling isn't spotless, but after 3K it doesn't matter.

She's a friggin screamer.

"belt maint? what belt maintenance?? something i should be doing?"

The only maintenance I've given my belt (after only two adjustments - it really didn't need the second one, though) is a visual inspection.

I was never a fan of the belt until I had one.

I'm trying to do the right thing and guide him along the path to Tuber righteousness.

I pictured you as a hermit on a mountain top when I read that, dispensing wisdom to the seekers of truth.

I just noticed you're from Steubenville... I grew up listening to my parents Dean Martin albums on a Telefunken hifi. One of the first movies I can recall seeing as a very young child was a Matt Helm flick. I always preferred his singing and acting to Sinatra's. I thought he was the coolest man on the planet.

I would imagine being from Steubenville, you've probably had your fill of Dean Martin, but I still have a man crush on him.

In order to find lean spots you must have a dyno run performed and ECMSpy is made for that.Where VDSTS is not, This is where the race ECM is at its best as it has adaptability built in. In my case the 555 cams are allowed for very nicely. And as Jos has stated the AFV is constantly monitored by the race ECM and corrected for the needs of a modified engine...am I close?
