I just lubed and adjusted the clutch cable a couple of weeks ago. Tonight it seemed to gain more slack than it had. I'm thinking the clutch cable may be beginning to fail. Do they normally break in the same spot, like up near the lever? Where should I check? I'm going to do a full clutch adjustment tomorrow but I've never had the clutch change suddenly like that before. Any advice? Thanks.

Probably right where the end is soldered on. It must pivot freely in the lever.

I lay the grease to mine occasionally.

YEP...

When you replace it, get the Barnett cable...

MUCH MUCH better than the stock stuff....

My original cable was on the bike for 5 years and I replaced it out of pure mercy. The factory cable I replaced it with didn't last one year before it frayed and broke during a ride... what an adventure that was on the way home home.

If your clutch cable ever breaks during a ride.... disable the clutch safety switch so you can start the bike in gear... it'll get you home in a pinch. If you time it right, you'll be surprised how easily you can change gears without using the clutch.

Clutch cable INFO:

Drill a small hole just above the clutch cable end at the clutch lever, so you will be able to put some lube 8 in the hole
ever so often ... And the clutch cable end at the clutch lever will never break !!!

Adjust your clutch cable and it gets loose again, could be the grenade spring plate going bad ...

Replace it with two metal and one fiber plates and you will have basically a racing clutch !!!

The only time I had a clutch cable break was on my FLHP, right at the start of a ride home (2 hours, in the rain). Police bike, clutch safety..pull it in, *snap*. At least it started. +1 for above, you'd be surprised how easy it is to clutchless-shift a bike...but those no-clutch downshifts on a wet road when exiting the highway are good for a pucker or two! Locks up that back tire juuuust long enough to make you wonder....

You can do the same thing as above for the lube if you just loosen it all the way at the cable adjuster and pull the sleeve back from the perch. I use dri-slide on my cables with good luck, and it comes with a syringe/needle dispenser you can stick in the sleeve and pump it into the cable. I usually go until it dribbles out of the adjuster and re-adjust the cable. Good till the next rainstorm-ride, lol.

Thanks guys. I adjusted the clutch as per the manual and examined both ends of the cable. I don't see any problem so I don't know why it picked up slack. I'll just have to keep an eye on it. The Norton is down with a totally trashed clutch/belt drive pulley so maybe I was just being paranoid or maybe the M2 just wanted to get some attention.
